This sounds wacky to me  Why can't any 1 or 2 or 4 or x people book, with the proviso that there must be a minumum number of reservations "in total" — just like a drive or walk, which may not take place unless enough people book.

Actually i works like this. When at Berg and Dal we had to make a provisional booking and only heard the next day if the
restaurant would allow a party of 4 on a bushbraai.

I think that a bushbraai is very pricy to organise. You have the cooking area which must be prepared. As i mentioned before , we had 4 people looking after a party of 4. As with walks its only 2 SANparks personel with you. I know that you pay more for the bushbraai, but then the food is included.

The Letaba bush braai is very worth it. I must say it was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

Ok...the word is that there is no word! That's not strictly true but for the next few months, until the restaurant operator begins their operations in the the park (in April) Bush Braais will continue to be camp, number and equipment dependent/specific.

Each camp has different capacity in terms of available guides and vehicles and imposes different minimum numbers on this activity depending on other camp activities (for example, on a night with no game drive for example, a vehicle and guide will be available, but on another night, they may not etc).

All involved are aware that changes need to be made with regard to how this activity is run, and these changes will hopefully be made in the near future. Apologies for the inconvenience and continue to check as far in advance as possible with the camps if you'd like to experience what is a truely memorable activity!

Oh, the bush brekkies are great! It is an experience - the drive to the breakfast spot, the cooking al fresco (glorious smells & bush rituals) and savouring your meal in the wild! Fantastic! It is a must do! 8)

Hi Max,

Have a look at this thread, there's some info there you might want to read.

Bush Breakfasts & Bush Braais

You can book them at some camps. Letaba, Berg en Dal I'm sure of.

And the's a bit of info here and in the Camps and Roads forum. Will try to find that thread too.

Hi Flaxy,

Welcome to the forum! I just got back from my first trip to Kruger and a bush breakfast was one of the highlights. We stayed at Satara for the first two nights, and did a Bush Brekkie at N'wanetsi picnic site on the 2nd morning. No one else had booked for that day, so it was just the two of us and 3 staff members. It was really fantastic--great food, a great location, and very friendly people. I felt a bit badly, because after we'd been there for a few minutes, other people began to arrive with their own breakfasts at the site, and were clearly wondering how we'd wound up with such a feast :)

Anyway, I didn't make any of the arrangements, but I mentioned your post to Portero (who did all the work), and he's going to post something about it. I know you'll be staying at different camps, but I'm guessing they would have similar prices and arrangements.

Hi Flaxy. As WeeBirdy said, one of the many highlights of our week in Kruger was the bush breakfast that we had at the N'wanetsi Dam picnic site. I don't think -- others may correct me -- that I could have arranged this through the normal channels of activity reservations. I called Satara Camp directly and got from them the number of their cafeteria manager, Frikki. I then called him directly and asked if he could arrange a b.b. for us. He was very nice and helped us plan just what we wanted. I paid for the breakfast ahead of time at the cafeteria check-out, rather than in the camp main office. So there's obviously an organizational distinction between the two, which is why the reservation needs to be made separately. We left camp at 6am, took our time driving along the S100 and and S41, and arrived at the picnic site at 7.30 to find the immaculately dressed staff waiting for us with a mouth-watering cooked breakfast ready to serve. I had a bowl of granola with fruit and yoghurt, three servings of omelette, various types of sausage, bacon, mushroom, tomato, etc., a quart of fresh-squeezed orange juice, and at least four excellent cups of coffee; but W.B. stuck to the baked goods (she's not called "wee" for nothing), including two croissants, perhaps because she has trouble pronouncing the word correctly. I think the price was something like 280 rand for the two of us, which seemed an amazingly good deal to us, given all the time and effort by the staff. When we finally waddled back to our bakkie -- no dishes to wash! -- we were only able to drive 20mins or so before we wanted to pull over to the side of the road for a short nap. I don't think we ate, or needed to eat, any more food until late in the evening. It all went wonderfully, and as W.B. says, it was a memorable experience.

Our bush braai was arranged with Shinwedzi. It was an excellent experience being in the middle of nowhere surrounded by whatever that was lurking in the dark. They placed brown paperbacks with candles inside, around our area. That really added to the wonderful atmosphere.

Our meal was define and there was enough food to feed the whole of Shinwedzi!

It was quite an experience to sit down and eat because our table was moving with insects. All types of insects!

So before each byte you had to check the fork first for a creepy crawly. I know we all probably ate more than just our food especially when you take a byte of the mielie pap and it had an unknown crunch to it. ImageI really loved every moment of it. Raw Nature at its best!
We didnt see any animals unfortunately but we did see a Red Roman Spider.

Just returned from spending 4 days in the knp. I booked a BB at Satara and it was absolutely fantastic. The drive was really exciting as we saw a breeding herd of Elephant in excess of 100 and they seemed to be very upset at something and were stomping around the bush trumpeting. on the drive to Nwanetsi picnic spot we had just missed Lion but did however see quite a few Wild Cat which I have not seen in many years. The Braai itself was 5 star and they certainly went over board with the catering, although our party was 6, there was food for 20 people.
My advice is that if you can afford the R305-00 per person then go for it. You will remember the ecxperience for a very long time. Dress warmly as the cold front we were waiting for hit that night.

Hi Everyone

last year we organised an evening bush braai from satara (they drive you to Nwanetsi and then its the most fantastic spread all laid on - there were only 2 of us - magic!) and this year we would like to do it again. Does anyone know if they do a similar thing from Olifants?

Hi Amandebult,

Perhaps you wouldlike to contact Olifant's restaurant? You should be able to book a bushbraai with them.

thanks everyone

re; Satara - they go via one of the firebreak roads, then up the tar road. When we got there - table all laid out, candelight, massive spread of food, wine etc - and we were the only ones doing it! We came back via the tar road also....after jump-starting the night drive truck as the batt had gone flat!

We were a party of 4 adults and 2 children under 12. I was not aware of the minimum number that is required. I suggest you speak to Satara directly, either to Lerato or Gordon. You pay seperately for the drive and then to the restaurant for the number of people in your party. Please also ensure that there is a ranger for the restaurant staff as they go 2 hours ahead of you.

Hi

No KNP camp offers the Bush Braais as standard inventory, they all operate the activity on an ad-hoc basis only. Availability depends very much on demand, as often the same vehicle and guide used for the night drive needs to accomodate the bush braai, and this is at the camps discretion. This may expalin why some camps have imposed a minimum number on the activity.

I do know there have been many discussions about this since the new KNP restaurant service provider was appointed a little earlier in the year, and I do remind them to tell me if the status of this activity changes...I will mail them this thread.

Dianne
