One place I have never visited and am keen in visiting soon is Tamboti tented camp.

What is it like and does anyone have pics of it?

What does the camp look like? What animals r roaming the fences at night? Is the road leading to the camp in good condition.

Is it a nice camp overall?

Stayed there last year in September over a weekend. Some company get-together.
Very nice little camp. You are just far enough away from the other tents to almost feel all alone in the bush.
Hyenas at the fence every night. On the Friday night people saw a leopard in the riverbed. The Sunday night, after we had left a pride of lions brought down a buffalo in the riverbed, right in front of one of the tents.
General area very nice, road leading to camp not bad. Only 1-2km long and frequented by zebra, wildebeest, elephants.
One elephant actually stood guard in front of the gate on the Friday, had to be careful when using the gate.

We stayed there often in the past (once for 6 nights), we loved it - had a leopard in the river in front of our tent for over an hour one evening. Also noctural noises are so much closer than if you stayed in a chalet. It's like "wild" compared to the other camps.

This is a wonderful camp. All the tents are semi-private so you have a feel of being the only people there. The game viewing in the surrounding area is great. We had a wonderful sighting the one evening at the fence, when about 10 hyaena chased an impala male into the camp fence, killed and ate him. The whole camp turned up to watch as as you can imagine the noise was unbeleveible. The whole episode did not last much longer than 30 minutes and at the end there was nothing left of the impala.

WTM, this is my favorite camp. Last June we stayed in number 40. It is right at the end, so very private. At 2 in the morning we had a huge ellie eating right next to the tent. I told him not to wake me the next night so lo and behold he arrived at 5 in the afternoon while we were at the car. He came towards us and lifted his trunk to "smell" us. I ran back to the tent 'cause I was scared he would decide to stay there the whole night. My husband waited at the car and slowly walked back when he walked away. Luckily he got inside before Oom Ollie came right next to the tent to finish off the bush he was eating the night before. He was there for about and hour and when he had had enough, he just stopped eating and moved off so silently that if we had told anybody there had been a huge ellie there, they would not have believed us!

Alos, we had a giant eagle owl "hooting" the whole night. The next morning before we left camp he came swooping over from the opposite side of the river to our side. It was fantastic.

been very busy lately and havent been on the forum for what seems like ages.

For some reason I posted my reply to Ark's question as a PM?? I must have clicked PM instead of Post Reply. I realised this when i read Arks' reply. As Arks mentioned to me, it would helpful to others too so here it is:

I know the question was directed at Wendy but I can give you some info on that.

I have stayed at Tamboti twice before, its beautiful! Tents 30-40 are the Luxury Safari Tents (we have only stayed in these). They are almost like tree houses and yes, they are en-suite, in fact their bathrooms are the nicest in the park.

The only thing that I must warn you about is that staying in the Tents is very weather dependant. Whilst the Park enjoys great weather most of the time, the tents can be very uncomfortable in heavy wind, and on very cold nights. Last year, we had three great nights there, the weather was amazing until the last night, a cold front had blown across the country from the Cape (not unusual in winter) and had reached the park during the night. It was FREEZING (in South African terms ) Dont worry too much about weather though, I would imagine that early September would be ideal.

ALL the tents have amazing views, so the differences are minor, 39 and 40 are a bit nicer because they are right at the end and each one has a huge tree very close by. 40 is probably the best because its in the corner and therefore the bush is not only in front but also to the right. The camp itself is very low impact and its easy to forget that you are actually in a camp. I love walking around there because it feels like youre walking int the bush, but without the danger aspect.

Yes they do have and can be booked through Orpen. The drives for instance consist of people from Orpen, Maroela and Tamboti, so they leave at Orpen (bit earlier) and then they go and pick up everyone from Maroela and Tamboti.

I've stayed there many times but never found a hide
There is a hide at Maroela, the camp site, just along the road.
I also have never seen a camp layout map, just been given a key and the tents are well numbered and signposted
Number 40 is magic.

Tamboti does have a hide. When you come in at the gate take the first dirt road on your left. Maybe the road is overgrown now but it was still there last year Nov.
The biggest problem is that it looks smack bang into a mound of sand which has become overgrown with bush and trees.

Look out for the honey badger that is in camp. He is not seen often. There are also African wild cats in the camp, and hyena patrol the (outside of the) fence after dark.

My favourite camp.

Go on a night ride - they fetch you from Orpen and ask to see the webcam from the road. We did this in July and saw 2 male lions walking on the road from the Orpen gate.

The tent with wheelchair access is no. 33. The bathroom of this unit is also bit bigger to accommodate wheelchairs. Nice view as well.

No 40

Hi funky! Welcome to the forums. You will find all you need to know about Kruger and all the other parks here. As to your question, the price quoted will be for the tent, but will also stipulate how many people that will cover. This is known as the base rate. For example, if the price is R40 for a tent and the base rate is 2, that means 2 people can share the tent for a total of R40 per night. Hope this helps. Is this your 1st time to Kruger? If you are budgeting, don't forget about the daily conservation fee each person must pay. You can read about it in the section entitled Tariffs on the left of the screen.

Hi Funky & welcome to the forum.

There are 2 types of tents in Tamboti, firstly the budget type for 2 or 4 occupants. These have beds with bedding, hand and bathtowels each, fridge, electric points and a fan and are serviced daily. Outside there is a braai (barbecue). You use the communal (clean) ablutions and kitchens which have electric hotplates and washing up facilities, and boiling water on tap. You have to take your own utensils, cutlery and crockery

I have never stayed in the up market ones, which have own ablutions, kitchen and are fully equipped for eating.

Each unit looks down onto the Timbavati riverbed which is usually dry.

It is great value for money and the H7 to Satara often ranks with the best in the park for sightings. I saw the big 5 plus cheetah and wild dog in the road in a combination of my last 2 trips.
