Not to be negative... but we've all had our share of stomach upsets from overindulging in meat which has spent too long in a coolbox with no ice I'm sure!

I have only one food item which makes me sad in Kruger actually - when browsing the meat freezers and seeing little packs of "skilpaadjies" . Is this really necessary? We're lucky to see one or two in the wild on each visit, so seeing them in the freezer does seem a real shame (although I'm sure they are brought in from outside of the Park?)

Are those REAL "skilpaadjies"?!!

My reaction exactly. On the one hand you could say that one tortoise has no more value in life than one cow, but really - there aren't that many of them! Actually, it amazes me that there are any left at all the speed they move at

I once nearly picked up a pack thinking it was hamburger patties, and wondering why it had all these bits of fat in thin strips crossed over each other . Talk about being put off lunch quickly.

Thought skilpaadjies were mince wrapped in either cabbage leaves or bacon?

I'm sure it is mince wrapped in bacon, skilpaadjies is just the name for them, but I can see how you could mistake them.

They cant be real, Meg. mmmm.....traditional skilpaadjies are lamb liver wrapped in netvet(translation: kidney fat). Then there are also Asperies which are often confused with skilpaadjies, they are a piece of beef - usually fillet - wrapped in streaky bacon.

I am just gonna leave it at that..

Wow, I'm so relieved now that I brought this up! The whole idea was really playing on my mind, it's great to find out it's just some wierd fat over some mince!

I've seen worse ... I was on holiday with my folks in the "Western Cape" and we met this Netherland Family. We offered them Biltong and they ate to their hearts content.

When they asked what it was, we told them raw meat...

Toilets were not close enough.

Damn...my 2 fellow musketeers...we better make sure we don't say something that might put us in a spot ... The day that happens, I think I'll rather unregister and take my chances with a female lion with a cub...they will have a field day with us.
