What B.O.P is this btw?

1. Distinct yellow eye which excludes young martial.
2. All dark bill which rules out tawny, steppe, wahlberg's and other similar eagles.

Leave Brown and dark juvenile Black-breasted snake eagles for me.

Definitely a Snake-Eagle and I would vote for immature Brown Snake-Eagle.

Ja, I would go with Deefstes on this one.

Yes I also definetly agree with Deefstes and Johann on this one, Imm. Brown Snake Eagle also came out tops in my analysis.

Would size alone dicount this being a female Lesser Kestrel or are there more convincing ID points. My initial guess was Lesser Kestrel so would be interested to see why you guys think Greater.

Can someone please help confirm ID of this small raptor seen twice in KTP in September. Rangers or other birders were unsure of what it is, we think a lesser kestrel juvenile???

Adult Greater Kestrel.

The juvenile Greater, female and juvenile Lesser Kestrel all show dark eyes.

Its an adult Greater Kestrel and the other name for it, White-eyed Kestrel gives it away. It's the only true adult falcon in the world with a light eye. It also has the weird behaviour of hiding prey under stones or grass.

What?? that is by no means any eagle
def. juvi. greater kestrel
look at
1)size compared to leaves (small)
2)shape of wings (thin, falcon-like)
3)shape of head (square)
4)shape of beak(notice the tomial tooth present only on falcons and kestrels)
5)colour of eye (white with dark rings)

this is definitely a greater kestrel!!

Greater kestrel yes, juvenile no... it is the adult that sports the light eye... the juvenile has the dark eye.

 Here is one example, not juvenile, but neither fully adult... showing the transition from dark eye lightening up. You can also see the beak features deefstes refers to

Thanks for pointing that out falconer1. Dreadful of us to let that one slip by. As JvR mentions, it is not a juvenile though.

Looks like a greater kestrel to me, Gregor — and a very nice pic! 8)
