Finally managed to add this bird to my list. Not in a SANPark though but hopefully will see one in Kruger at the end of January.

Beautiful bird and a great pic FD. :D
On checking through my field guide I see I have one ticked, seen in KNP at the Engelhard Dam in 2002.

I got it at Crooks Corner. There was water in the rivers, but not much so the birds had plenty place to walk around with no bushes or whatever in the way for me. 8) Now for a longer lens...

I know the problem at Crooks Corner
We saw one there as well, but after taking a photo it was just a small spot on the horizon
We met this on on the H10 on the way to Nkumbe Lookout.

The grey breast and black belly would distinguish it from the White-Crowned Lapwing.

It is an African Wattled Lapwing, yes.

ps: If you look closely in the Sasol guide you will also see that the top of the head is white.

As WTM said the forehead of the African Wattled Lapwing is indeed white. The crown (front and top of head) in White-crowned Lapwing is white.

To see the white forehead of Wattled Lapwing have a look at these photos I posted some time back

Hi there :)

These are Wattled Lapwing, Walter Sisulu is way out of range for White-crowned Lapwing.....Have a look at your photos compared to others, you'll see a noticable difference........

1.Wattled are grey/brown below, not white.
2.Have a streaked face and neck, not plain grey.
3.Have a black belly, not white.
4.Short wattles, not long.
5.Yellow eye ring, not white.
6.Red above the wattle, full yellow wattle in White-crowned Lapwing.
7.Plain brown above, compared to White crowned having a white collar on upper back.

To name the most prominant features :) Distribution alsohelps a lot.

Justin

Thanks again Justin. At first when I saw them I thought White crowned, but when I got home and put the on the PC and pulled Sasol and Roberts close I also thought Wattled - wasn't sure though
