Honey badger sightings are usually most unexpected and brief as the badger(s) is usually on a mission. One is very lucky, as we were in Kgalagadi some years ago, when he started to dig in the sand close to the vehicle for some minutes.

In Kgalagadi, one can witness the synergy between the badger, black backed jackal and pale chanting goshawk. The BBJ & PCG wait patiently while the badger tears at the ground unearthing delicacies for them both. So if you see a PCG in a low tree and/or a BBJ skulking around, there might be a HB nearby so keep alert.

I am unaware of any similar 'partnership' in Kruger.

HB sounds like a very interesting animal. Am I right in assuming that HB are not strictly nocturnal?

Yes, but the extremes of the day are the best times ( like most animals) for them.

This was taken near Nossob, November 2013. On this trip I had 5 sightings and got many photos although on all my previous trips I've never seen them in KTP and only once or twice in Kruger.
Apparently the lack of vegetation from last year's dry summer, means they are a lot easier to see at the moment.

From my last trip as well, also somewhere near Nossob. Spent over an hour with this guy as he caught many geckos, scorpions etc... I also spoke to quite a few other visitors who had seen some good HB sightings on their trip. Perhaps with the good rains lately and grasses returning, they'll "dissapear" again for the next 15 years! :)

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I hope I get the chance to try and take some in September 2014.

Two years ago me and a couple of friends were hiking in the Magoebaskloof near Tzaneen. We were having coffee on the stoep of one of the overnight huts when the stream in front of me led my eyes to the determined movement of a honey badger. I went into the cabin to report the news and fetch my camera to capture this rare sighting.

After a while the honey badger was right in front of us in the stream moving between and over rocks. The next moment the honey badger pounced behind a rock in the stream, panic and chaos disturbed the silence of the forest as the honey badger emerged with a young bushbuck clutched in its jaws. It was soon clear that there was only going to be one winner in this battle as the bushbuck gave up all hope of ever seeing the sun set again. The winner disappeared into the forest with its hard earned prize.

I submitted these photo's to the 50/50 television program and they were featured in the Veldfokus segment of 50/50.

Below are some of the pictures I took. The quality is poor due to the darkness of the forest an me only having a point and shoot camera on the hike.

Wow, amazing sighting, I can't believe a small honey badger could catch and kill a bushbuck, just shows how strong they are

We were very fortunate to witness such an event, probably a once in a lifetime sighting.
