Hi All

No quite sure how to address this issue: I'm sure we all appreciate the efforts of the military in the fight against Rhino poaching etc.... but

For a start, These 'Jeep Jockeys' and 'military drivers' need to spend at least a year out in the bush with the army and park rangers on their patrols- after they have completed their "guiding courses' . The Army does not know a lot about wildlife and the guide does not know about warfare. They can teach each other, it can only be a win win situation.
And yes, my son is a guide,
I am most distressed that he does not have proper military training. There are more poachers now than rhino's- in the parks

Take vehicle numbers and report them. Action will be taken.

We had the same experience as you Melman-we we also in the park the last 2 weeks and even my young kids were commenting on the way the military vehicles drive! They seem to race from one point to another-and yes I did ask some parks staff if this is the norm and their answer-yes it is but they are allowed-they fight poachers and have to move around quickly!

Well, they dont seem to be very effective. Not even as a deterrent. And I agree with what Isinkwe reckons about getting a bit of exposure to the conservation approach of being in the reserve. A long time ago during my military training we were called on to do some ops in Etosha for a while and I swear, that turned into a freeforall that was quite a horror story. But at the end of the day it was the okes that complained about what was going on that got into most of the trouble. So, I dont know what action can be taken against this.

Hi everyone

I know this has been discussed many times but I do not have the data time to do a search.

Early in the morning a couple of days ago we were very distressed by an incident on the main road from Skukuza to Lower Sabie.

While stopped in the middle of the road with a very large pack of baboons and enjoying their antics I noticed a car speeding up the inside of our vehicle. Clearly it was not going to stop so I waved my arm outside the window but it made no difference. He just flew past on the inside scattering and scaring dozens of baboons and their babies that were playing on the road and had to run for their lives.

I still cannot believe none were hit and killed as the driver ploughed through well over the speed limit and barely slowing down.

In fact I still cannot believe what I really saw.

I was terribly distressed by what I saw and am still upset. However I did have the thought to take a photo of the vehicle which I now have a clear shot of him driving through and easily read plates.
I could easily describe the driver as he was so close.

Now I have to unfortunately add that it was not a tourist but a white Sanparks labelled utility vehicle.

Please help me with who best to advise of this shocking behaviour.

Hi VicRob
The speeding in Kruger is really getting out of hand.
As you are in the park why not try the 24 hours number of 013 735 4325 and I am sure they will give you the correct address to forward your photo.
Hope something is done about it.

Well, yes. Please report. What about slapping the picture up here for us as well? Might help the cause a bit as well.

This is straight out horrifying and completely unacceptable.

The whole ethos of the employer concerned in the park is straight out wrong for a National Park.

There should not be one single driver of a parks vehicle in the parks employ capable of such blatant acts of terrorism against the wild life in our park. Not one.

Unfortuntely instead this is a common occurence witnessed by many visitors.

Koen, I couldn't agree more with you   They are employed in a national park therefore they should be more than 100% concerned about the environment that they work BUT most times a job is just a job......................... :hmz: :hmz:

A similar thing happened to me in April on the Lower Sabie Bridge, we were watching a group of 100 baboons with their babies running across bridge and a vehicle came speeding across it from the other side almost hitting some of the baboons.

We stuck our hand out the window to tell him to slow down but he didn't listen, and then what made us so angry was that he started going after the baboons with his car and was zig-zagging after them almost running one of them over and the ones running on the side of the bridge almost fell into the Sabie River. As he was doing this he was laughing and he thought this was really funny. That just got my blood boiling.

I tried to get a photo of the car and the number plate but he was going so fast I couldn't get one which was a pity.

Guess what, he was a SANPark's employee.

This kind of behaviour should not be allowed in the park and he should be fired on the spot.

Samantha
