Hi,

Have been away for a few weeks, and came home to a green but dry Western Cape.

Am planning to take a bus full of school children on a short photography trip on 16 August. I have googled myself silly for "Namaqualand flowers 2013" but it seems as if the drought up there is so bad they have had no rain...?

Please prove me wrong and say where the flowers are!

God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

I myself am not sure . But last year we had so much rain here in Parklands and it also was very wet up at WCNP and the flowers then were early we went just before the public holiday
THis year we have had very little rain ..so I suppose the flowers wont be so great . You in Somerset West have had far more rain than us ..
Cant help you there then But it would be great for the children to go for the trip .

Friedrich,

There was an article last week in Die Burger about the Namakwaland flowers. Apparently, they are alreadiy starting to come out in the Kamieskroon, Garies, Namakwa National Park (Skilpad section) and Springbok area.

According to that article, best time will probably be within a week or two from now. They apparently had good early winter rains up there but not much thereafter and the last few weeks of sunshine is probably going to result in a premature flower season this year.

Enjoy it! I am also planning a trip around the weekend of 8th August seeing the Friday is a public holiday as well.

Planning to drive N7 up to Piekenierskloof Pass, then take the Paleisheuwel gravel road up to Elandsbay and Lambertsbay, then the gravel railway road (toll road) from Lamberstbay up to Doringbay, Strandfontein, Lutzville, then on to Koekenaap and from there the gravel again to the sea and then up the west coast via Groenrivier, to Springbok, back via N7 to Garies then gravel again to Loeriesfontein, Calvinia and then via the Tankwa Karoo NP to Ceres and back home.

Blackie.

On the "go northern cape" facebook page, they have also reported early spring flower shows in Namaqua NP and surrounds -- a month earlier than usual.

I guess I'm going to miss all the flower fun when I get there end of August

Gosh if they are early we will miss them too Dabchick .. but then I suppose we could always pop up tot eh WCNP as its less than an hour from us .. but the section with all the flowers must then open up ..
Any way hope they have lovely flowers even if they are early

Spoke to friends in Garies today and if they get some rain in the near future it can be a good season. End of August most of the time delivered in the past. I am booked for end August.
End August 2012 just outside Skilpad.

I was up in the Namaqua National Park, Groenrivier mouth and area around a few weeks ago and the flowers were definitely starting to come out. Not in huge numbers but definitely around. They were quite short compared to last year.

AstroMatt, WillieV, Hugh, Dabchick and Blackie,

Thanks so much for the good news. I also phoned Nieuwoudtville, and they reckon the flowers are very early, but better than last year...! Have booked place there for my wife and I over the long weekend of 9 August, so I can check out the flowers for the school kids the following week... am looking forward to it.
Good heavy rain falling in Somerset West right now, so hopefully some of it will go up that way too!

Thanks again and God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Wow, this is really early. By September there might be nothing left. :hmz:

For some reason the flowers down here in Langebaan are a bit late, but there are a lot of young ones that should bloom in a week or two.

@BB September is normally a bit to late. Best month for flowers in general is most certainly August.

Agreed WKK. The first week of September is usually the latest you will get a reasonable show, but the second half of August is usually when the best happens.

@BB in 2008 we traveled through the Springbok area on 01 and 02 August - going north to the Richtersveld. This was taken on 01 August:

I also thought we will have wonderful sightings in 2 weeks (mid August) on our way back home. Big was my surprise when there was nothing left! However I have to agree. In general (but not always) mid August is your best bet.

Lovely.

I think Namaqualand should be classified as female WKK.

Unpredictable and does things in her own sweet time.
