Finally did get to see my caracal in Madikwe in March this year. We were on a drive with a 9-year old girl from the USA on her first ever trip to SA. During her time here - she saw almost all that one can wish to see, but she still wanted to see a cheetah. I was sitting and explaining to her that the bush always keeps a little something from you - as to lure you back to come and try and find it another time. I told her that even though I've been in the African bush many times I've never seen a Caracal - and I'll have to keep on coming back untill I find one!

It was dark on the sunset drive back to camp, and the guide went off-road to get closer to a brilliant sighting of two White-faced Scop's Owls (lifers for us), and as we approached - he saw movement deeper in the grass - we had to move close passed the owls who then flew away :| , but then we saw it - a Caracal! It was great! You should've seen the American girl's expression - "she just said it then we saw it!!!" After that she told me that I now don't need to come back anymore... I saw my caracal!

But I will be back... Still need to see one in KNP and KTP and Addo....

Anne-Marie the best ever Caracla sighting girl

I've had 3 sightings in 18 months in KNP. Different spots though...
1 on H3 about 10km N of Afsaal
1 just outside Olifants on S92
and 1 on the same trip on the H14

Saw my 5th Kruger caracal on 11 July this year at around 6:30. Sighting was on the S100. It killed a guineafowl right in front of our car. This was the second time I've witnessed a caracal kill in Kruger!

Sorry for the poor quality. The images are snap shots from my camcorder. (My wife decided to sleep in, and I had to choose between my camera and camcorder.) Needless to say she was green with envy when I showed her the shots!

Here is one of my kiekies on the H14 at about 11:00 in the morning

Image

My other 2 sightings was one at 14:00 near Olifants and one about 10:00 near Afsaal. So my times varies a lot and no early sightings for me. FC they are the most beautiful cat in the PArk I believe

5 Caracals and 2 kills in Kruger, that's just fantastic
Did you see them all in the early morning or late afternoon or also during the day? And may I ask what was the second kill?
I know I'm very curious but these cats get me very excited

Hi flying cheetah

Most of my previous sightings were in the morning. The first caracal kill was on the H1-1 a few km before Skukuza - also a guineafowl, which the caracal caught in mid air. Spectacular to see!

Thank you all for the pics and the background information  That gives me new hope that I will also find my first Caracal one day
@Heksie: I totally agree! Beside the cheetah it must be the most beautiful cat in the park

Here are a few photos of a Caracal taken in KTP about 10K north of TR one interesting thing is that the cat is in South Africa, and our vehicle is in Botswana. Makes for an interesting story. By the way the light was superb. We will probably never get shots like this again. He/she hung around long enough for us to take about 150 photos.

Unbelievable that this cat allowed you to take 150 pics, I would be more than happy if I get one or two one day
