Quiet morning drive with 5 folk from camp. We had scrub hare, impalas, kudus three times, duiker, lots of birds, lone buffalo, giraffe......evidence of ellies and rhinos but no sightings. Now for some brekkie and then decided whether to 'office' or take it easy..... Need some groceries though....

All has been relatively quiet recently as far as drives go. Animals have been around camp though.....seen ellies, bushbuck, waterbuck, impalas, hyenas for example....also heard hippos, lions and leopard.

I am going to try to catch up with some photo posting while I sit in lectures (at Skukuza for Parks Heritage course) - I am just here to help trouble-shoot etc but enjoying listening too. Always gain a bit more knowledge!

Last night I joined DB and Hawk for a meal, and the preparations etc were supervised by this bushbaby which spent a long time in the tree above us. Hawk and I kept trying to get photos, and it would pose beautifully until we were ready to snap and then would move!

Giraffe on the road

Big lion footprint on the road - we had passed earlier and it was not there then...... we looked closer and the marks showed that it had actually tried to catch an impala but probably just missed.

This hyena tried to come into camp earlier this week. I heard it walk along the fence next to the caravan and went out with my camera, only to see it heading towards the open gate. I chased it off after taking some photos.

Thanks Salamanda!

ON Sunday I returned via Croc Bridge so I could pick up post. The trip down gave me lots of ellies.....one male walking on the side of the road towards me, with cars stopped in front of me (a couple with reverse lights showing) and several following behind him. As I approached I sized up the situation. He was ambling along, ignoring the traffic totally. I decided to pass, keeping my speed as the vehicle was running very quietly and changing speed or touching the brakes would make a noise (the brakes in the courtesy car I am driving at present squeal at times). He did not even acknowledge my presence as I drove past!!!! No turn of his head, alteration in steps or direction.....even his eye on my side had a sleepy look about it.

Also had giraffes, impalas, kudus, hippos, wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, and several huge traffic jams!

On Tuesday evening I did a night drive for BnD which was very quiet but did give us a couple of spotted eagle owls, impalas, scrub hares, giraffes, rhinos, hyenas.

Last night another night drive which started off even quieter! Later in the drive we had a couple of rhinos grazing right next to us for a while, totally ignoring us. Guests kept very quiet and the lights away from the animals' heads which helped of course. Later a civet which stayed with us for a while too.....but a bit active so photos were difficult. Then a couple of separate hippos, one very close to us. A glimpse of a giraffe plus the usual impalas and scrub hares made up most of the rest of the drive together with some well-behaved spotted eagle owls.

But as we got close to the BnD gate at the end I saw something in the road.....a leopard walking towards us! He came past us slowly, I turned the vehicle and we followed him for a bit. He stopped at the dump turning and roared!!!! Impalas began alarm calls..... He walked on and we followed a bit, but it was getting late. I passed him turned and we had a last look before going back to camp.

On my way home I found him again, and the owls, and a couple of porcupines!

Tonight I had only 2 guests, folk who usually visit the north of the park but gave BnD a try this time.

Another quiet night, but rhinos. impalas, scrub hares, several spotted eagle owls, genets, hippos all put in an appearance, and all were photographed......even the thick-knees managed to pose! Just after the big marula tree on the loop before Matjulu bridge I saw something in the road......yes, another magnificent leopard! No roaring this time, but instead he decided to lie down in the grass at the side of the road after some marking of territory and give himself a good clean. Then I saw him look up and told the guests he would get up soon and walk off.....and a couple of seconds later he did just that! Wonderful sighting.

It has got very windy, clouds about, so the bad weather is coming in.

Well, the 1st Aid course went OK, and will upgrade it to Level 3 over the next couple of months.

Car story remains a total nightmare.....used a hire car this week, and will have the loan of a friend's bakkie next week (have to take him to Olifants and fetch him again though). Meanwhile hope I can get something sorted out and repairs done this week....

Spent this past week on a reserve near Hoedspruit on a tracking course. It was a great week.....even though I was the only female there as usual! Getting used to sorting these menfolk out now...... Made some stupid errors in the assessment and argued myself out of correct answers, but still made Level 2 and only just missed getting Level 3. The only folk who made Level 3 were already trackers or a field guide long involved in training and assessments himself.

Drove through Kruger from Orpen gate to get home, and found giraffes, impalas, and zebs just past the gate with ostriches on the other side of the road and wildebeest near them, plus warthogs......all within the first 1.5km!

Other sightings were hippos, buffaloes, lions (3 youngsters crossing the road), waterbuck, ellies, crowned eagle, vultures circling near Tshokwane, kudus.......

Now having a 'mug meal' and then going to get an early night.
