We shopped at the Spar after a long flight and it was very well stocked and easy to get to. There's a bank in the same shopping center, too! :)

We've also shopped at the Spar and were pleasantly surprised at the variety of goods available. I don't think you will be disappointed. :)

Thanks for the feedback. That makes life a lot easier. Do you happen to know if the Spar sells vacuum flasks (we call them thermos flasks in Australia)? Isn't this forum a great place to find answers.

Sorry, no idea. We've never looked for one, and have never noticed. You might want to check with Eco Junkie. She lives in Malelane camp and I'm guessing that she would be familiar with the shops in town.

Hi there Impyim.

Welcome from another Aussie Kruger addict.

We too always stock up at Super Spar in Malalane on the way in to the park. We find we can get everything we need there and more. They have a great range of foodstuffs. Also usually pick up some other essentials like South African wine and Amaroula.

As for the thermos up till last trip we always tucked ours in with our luggage, but we left it there last time due to weight. I know we have seen them in the stores but cant remember for sure if it was there or not but it is a well stocked store. Also from memory we also saw them in some of the camp shops n Kruger. It is of course an essential for those morning Amaruala coffees! :D :D

BTW I would reconsider that afternoon nap. On our first trip which was via Perth we drove straight out to Sabi Sand and arrived just in time for the afternoon game drive. All we wanted to do was shower and sleep but we stayed up and it was just wonderful and once you start seeing animals the adrenalin kicks in and you feel ok. Then you are so exhausted later you fall asleep at dinner time and have a great sleep. And then start again at 5am the next day!

When do you go ?

Hi VicRob - good to hear from other Aussies.
We took our own thermos' last time but coming back through customs they really checked them out, and I just though it would be easier to buy one in SA and leave it there.
As for your suggestion re. not having a afternoon nap - we'll just play it by ear I guess. You were at Sabi Sands where they do the driving on the game drive - we'll be doing most of the game drives ourselves (apart from an occasional a.m or p.m. with the Rangers) Mind you a game drive with the rangers the first nights might not be a bad idea.
We're booked
Malelane 13 to 15 August 2013
Skukuza 15 to 17 th and then again 24th to 27th August
Orpen 18th to 20th August
Letaba 20th to 23rd August
one night at Satara (23rd August
Lower Sabie 17the to 31st August.
We're trying some different camps this time (other than Skukuz).
We have only just booked (due to health problems) and in some cases had to take what we could get as a lot of the accomodation we wanted wasn't available.
Cheers :)

You will get everything you need at Spar or Pick and Pay (on the opposite side of the N4). Another useful store for flasks and plastic containers etc is Jet on the road parallel to the N4. Their prices for that sort of things are amazingly low.

Thanks Bert, I thought I had seen them in the camps.

We find the park shops very well stocked and in fact for our upcoming trip will probably buy a bit less before we enter and just keep topping up at the camps.

Impyim you are right it is different being driven around, but now we always go straight to Kruger and we still get pretty much the same feeling as soon as we drive in the Kruger gate..exhausted but happy and so excited :D :D

You are staying at a good range of camps, we too have only just booked and missed out just on one camp. I guess you know about watching for availabilty as you can change the booking online ? We would still like to adjust one night and check availability daily. Its always changing.

Interesting about customs and your thermos, but not surprising given what they are like, we had fun and games last time with a little wooden statue, was not impressed !!

Your trip is not far away, you must be excited

Any reason you are going in via Paul Kruger gate rather than Orpen gate? Where is your first camp? :hmz:

Hoedspruit has good shops and if you have to go in through Paul Kruger, you will go through Hazyview which also has a good variety of supermarkets.

Have managed to change camps from Skukuza to Tamboti so nearer Orpen as driving time was short, first time under canvas in Kruger, so excited.
Now just need to find a food shop in Hoedspruit.
Any ideas would be very welcome.
Thanks

Well it was going to be Skukuza until told about the road from airport to Paul Kruger Gate, so now planning to go in Orpen Gate and stay at Tamboti as we haven't got much time once in the park due to flight times.
So will need food to take in now. Any ideas for shops in Hoedspruit near airport would be great. Thanks

Entering near Talamati probably means Orpen - so shop in Hoedspruit, there is a big Pick and Pay where you can get all you need.

Then 30 kms before the gate is Hoedspruit with one of the Best SPAR stores.
We always stock up there and restock if we have to when staying at those Orpen area camps.

If you want to shop in Hoedspruit it is about 30 k's past the Orpen turn-off (coming from the south), but there is a relatively new P&Pay in Hoedspruit. (very nice shop).
As you enter Hoedspruit from the south you will see a Total filling station on the left, immediately after opposite the Total filling station) turn right and right again into a shopping complex, the P & Pay is at the far end.
Also a great Pizza place there, if you've got the munchies, on the left as you enter the complex.

Sure this will all be of help Lindah!
