We did our second trip to Augrabies in November last year. I always plan and hope to do a trip report, but never get round to completing them, so I decided to rather share our pics here.

My SO, Hawk, took the pics. We find the landscape in this park really breathtaking and just love it. It offers such amazing photo opportunities, it must be a professional photographers dream destination!

View the Falls illuminated at night at Augrabies

Unread postby Lesego » Wed Mar 13, 2013 3:35 pm

FREE ENTRANCE AT AUGRABIES TO SEE THE ILLUMINATED FALLS

Augrabies Falls National Park (AFNP) will be open to the public for free from 18:00 until 22:00 on 15 March 2013 to view the falls under lights. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for those wanting to see the falls illuminated at night.
The AFNP falls have been illuminated since December last year. The main waterfall is illuminated with 1000w and the side of the gorge is illuminated with 400w. One of the walk ways is also lit up with small led lights.
The park, which was proclaimed in 1966, is the spot where the Orange River changes from a wide, slow flowing river traversing sandy soil to a fast flowing; narrow one cutting through ancient granite.
According to Gabrielle Venter, Acting Regional Communications Manager, “The national parks cannot continue to be an island within communities, this is an opportunity for guests to enjoy their own heritage and develop a sense of ownership of the natural jewels within the park, keeping in line with our vision statement ‘Connecting to Society’ SANParks views the involvement of communities in the management of parks in the 21st century as vitally important. It is beautiful to see the falls lit up at night. The contrast is breath-taking.”
To view the illuminated waterfalls at any other time, guests are encouraged to make a reservation at the park or to book a dinner at the new restaurant, the Quiver Tree. The entrance fee for day visitors before 18:00 on 15 March will be the normal entrance fee rate and the day visitors area will still be closing at 18:00.

Last night drive was a bit different, had to go out with the media, so the drive was limit to Oranjekom, we did saw giraffes in the area of Moonrock as well as a herd of eland close to Oranjekom waterhole.

After this a visit at the falls to look at the new system of lights, which will enable visitors now to even have a LOOK AT IT DURING THE NIGHT.
Not the whole night :) .

Here is a picture I took of the illuminated Augrabies Falls on the 4th January this year, but unfortunately unlike other years this time, not much water came down over the falls!

Image

…..and this is the illuminated pathway towards the falls! I am of the oppinion that Augrabies is one of the best kept parks in RSA!
Well done! All the lookouts and 'catwalks' have been beautifully restored after the massive floods of two years ago!

Scanning through my 2003 (first) digital pictures I found some nice Augabies ones, this one is shot inside the camp while we were walking back from the falls to our tent.
In 2003 there was no boardwalk to mention of and hardly any fences to protect people from falling into the river....
