Shutterbug, we always go to Kruger in may and it can still get pretty hot, I have on many occasions used the air on on cold at night, so no need for thick winter woollies

I see there are going to be quite a few of us in Kruger in May ...

Wow, thats great news, thanks everyone. I was expecting to have to wear long-johns and use a hot water bottle and still be shivering cold hopefully May/June will be even more enjoyable than February what about swimming in the middle of the day, or am I getting a bit carried away
You have got me very curious as to what the photo is going to be

The only time you have to dress really warmly is if you go on night or morning drives in an open vehicle..

Definitely no, you might get a bit chilly at night and early in the morning but nothing major.
You don't need long johns or hot water bottles, believe me by no later than 9 o clock in the morning you will be more than comfortable in shorts and a shirt as for swimming.
I'm pretty sure you will want to do that 2 by the time midday hits

Hmmm.... A Canadian worried about cold conditions in Kruger

I normally caravan in may, June or July in Kruger. (am sure bungalows are warmer than caravans).
Shorts and T shirt just fine.
Camping sites are normally quite full of retired folk at that time, apparently our older generation feel the cold a bit more than younger people (thats what my elderly parents tell me) and it does some seem to bother them. The Kruger is probably one of the places in SA that have the most plea sent winters.
I do recall once putting on a light jacket, but that was off by 8 in the morning and often been for a swim during the day to escape the heat.
The north of the park is usually quite a few degrees warmer than the south but where ever you stay in the Kruger, you can leave your snow jacket and hot water bottle at home.
Your average temperature should be between 15(minimum) and 25-28 degrees celcius.(my opinion)

We will spend the whole May and half of April in Kruger. We are looking forward to the hopefully not rainy days and will enjoy every day as it comes. Cannot wait. Will take the yellow ribbon - Ursula

We have been in the KNP 2011 & 2012 in early May.
In 2011 the days were hot and the nights cool but last year the nights were very warm as well, didn't even need a jersey.
We swam everyday in Letaba, Satara & Orpen.
The water feels cold at first but very refreshing not like in the summer when it's like a warm bath.
It is a lovely time of the year for the stars as the night sky is very clear and the southern cross is up very early

This year we are having a change and going at the end of Sept when the weather can also be changeable and I think the swimming pools will be still be chilly after the winter.

Here is a photo of me in bed in Crocodile Bridge on the middle of winter.
It is not the photo I wanted to put in but it'll do.
Note that I am under the comforter and blanket and that I removed the comforter before sleeping as otherwise I would be too hot.
I am wearing the fleecy top over my t shirt as I had just come in from outdoors.
Note the book to read to lull one to sleep.
What the picture doesn't show is the half toasted-sandwich (tomato, cheese and onion) I have on the bedside table for a late night snack, nor the torch which I find useful for going outside on the early hours to find whatever is roaring or snorting or trumpeting on the other side of the safety fence.

It was on this night about half an hour after this photo as taken I told my wife in a tremulous voice, "There is something in the bed.
It is touching my leg."
With a maidenly shriek I threw back the bedclothes and sprang onto the floor.
In the bed was an ant.
I still claim it was a large one but my wife, who was laughing so hard she could barely breathe, told me it was not so large.
Nonsense. It was a huge ant with slavering jaws etc.
I simply flicked it onto the floor and went back to bed.
In retrospect it was simply the normal Kruger ant that one gets occasionally.

Sleep well in Kruger - you'll be warm. Don't worry.
