Tim yes the monkeys and baboons raid the fridges But the solution is to tie a cord around the fridge and then turn the door to face the wall and then prop the table against the fridge and then they might not be able to get in. !!!

Cord / door to wall / table AND CHAIRS and they still got in and eat my lunch.

Tim, some of the camps have cages around the fridges, like this in Satara

Have a look here for accommodation photos

Other wise do what Hugh has suggested..........

Tim be 'aware be very aware'. ... I was sitting on the stoop in Oliphants reading when I heard
A very slight noise at the side of me .... :hmz: .. I glanced around a a "cheeky little monkey" had
sneaked up and open our fridge :sniper: .. Mind you I don't know how got the biggest fright
him or me  I don't think he realised I was there ... So we always turn our fridges to the wall
were possible  ...

Definitely worth the while to turn the fridge door to the wall, or turn the whole fridge around, so that the door is at the back! No way they can open it then!

As Lion Queen said, Satara has meshed doors in front of their fridges, and I think Lower Sabie as well. We bought a lock to lock that cage to make absolutely sure that they cannot open it! They are VERY clever!

We have just stayed at Olifants and Satara and both the bungalows we had, had the cages built around them, so as long as you keep them firmly closed, no more monkey problems!
What we also used to do before then was place our heavy, tightly closed grocery box against the fridge door, no ways could they open the box or move it!
The main problem this time was when you were moving into your bungalow and unpacking the car, unless you were very vigilant and one of you either stayed with the car the whole time or you closed the boot lid/doors they were in in a trice!

Indeed, Elsa, I did observe monkeys on my last trip watching people unpack with great intensity. They are so very, very clever.

My mango breakfast after I dashed inside to grab a knife. :wall: :wall: :wall:

and it was such a perfectly ripe, chilled mango. :(

N ketty chases them away quick quick my step father never leaves home without it especially if he's going to camp in Berg n Dal he shoots next to them or in front of their feet they don't come back after that I must say their was a rude lady 2 years back who took over 4 camping sites and only paid for 1 well she was rude to everyone in camp when people asked her to move up well they say payback is a B....with an Itch and the next day the monkeys raided that woman's caravan in a big way needless to say everyone in their camps refused to chase them away because of her behaviour towards others, that ladies expression when they returned was PRICELESS

While staying at LS, we got back from our afternoon drive to find our fridge raided and a monkey sitting with our holder of sugar eating handfuls of it.we chased him but he took the Tupperware with the sugar with him, we never saw either again. Well had to go and buy more sugar. :D

Since then we are very careful with the fridge and keep all supplies locked away :D

Be vigilant at picnic spots as well. I have seen them steal from plates under people's noses at Orpen Dam.

We have a rubber snake called cedric and also a spray bottle filled with mainly water but with about an 8th vinegar
The spray must have a straight spray and direct it onto their coats
When they lick their coats you should see their expressions .. and after that just having the bottle on the table or holding it in the air makes them go and bother someone else
Its harmless and wont hurt them.

Had lots of fun with vervets over the years.
stayed in one place in Satara where you had to turn the fridge, only problem it was on a stand not much bigger than the base of the fridge, cost me two beers when the door came open whilst turning.
The ladies next door couldn't manage to turn the fridge so they piled all the patio furniture in front.
Seemed to work too.
Last year stayed in the ones at the front which have a cage.
Regularly every afternoon the vervets came on patrol, its amazing how many people close the fridge cage but still leave other things out, or in the cupboards which they can open easily.
The lady next door summed it up, 'they even took the banana I left for the birds'.
I had to bite my tongue.
