How about this as a solution to rhino poaching!

Rhino's are poached because people make a lot of money from it. Price for Rhino horn is high because of scarcity and supply difficulties.

SOLUTION: Grind up old cow horns and use it to flood the market with fake rhino horn - it will lower the price dramatically and therefore reduce demand. I know it can be DNA tested to see if it is the real thing but the cost and effort needed to do this would not be worth the effort.

Same could be done to replace lion bone trade - grind up old cow bones.

Its not a bad idea but wouldn't the black market pick up the difference in the powder?

I think it would take along time before anyone realizes what is happening and then the market would distrust all rhino / lion products - maybe even cause cartels to fight amongst themselves and kill each other off!!!!

Apparently the medicine men need to see the original horn to make sure it is genuine :sniper:

Ai, yoda do you know what happened to the story that they were injecting colouring into the horns? Do you know why it stopped? Its my opinion if they want to stop the poaching to cut off all rhino's horns but the only problem is how would the animals defend themselves in the wild without it

I think it is a good idea. At a time they wanted to put poison in the rhino horn.. wonder if that worked?

Not sure about the issue of colouring the horns.

But apparently cutting off horns is not 100% effective for 2 reasons:
-The paochers still kill the rhino to get whatever stump is left, no matter how small
-They kill them anyway, so they don't follow the spoor of an animal that doesn't have a horn by mistake.

You have to be very heartless..

But that is why the big guns get Mozambique people to do the dirty work for them, they are so poor they will do anything for money, even kill our precious rhino :(

If you have about US$100,000 you can hunt (call it sustainable utilisation) a white rhino in the buffer zone area of Timbavati Private Reserve as part of their conservation funding of.........white rhino. Photo with horn still intact probably comes free.
