Maybe we need a volunteer to sort out the marula fruit in camp......!

Seems the ellies left us alone last night. Suspect they will be back in a day or two though.....

Come and stay with me in marula season and spend the night making sure there are no marulas around so the ellies do not want to come into camp.......!!!!!! And be prepared to chase them out if they do........

No more trips to report - sorry! Did go to Skukuza for admin yesterday and came across quite a few ellies along the road, but no problems with them.

We have had more ellie problems in camp though......big guy was in camp yesterday morning early....was eventually chased away by section ranger.

Should have more to report next week, but only after Wednesday when I get back from Sand River Bush Camp......will be doing my first camp as second guide. Looking forward to it so much! Going to Skukuza tomorrow morning to invigilate for FGASA exams and then through to the bush camp - think I will be alone there tomorrow evening - wonderful way to get into the right mind-set!!!!

It was a good camp with a friendly group of guests. I had lions on my way to Skukuza on Saturday morning.....typical......wonderful sighting with the lions on the road, lying down but also cleaning themselves and moving about a bit......and I had to get past to get to the exam room and so had to resist getting the camera out. If I had done so it would have seriously weakened my efforts to get past. I flashed lights, displayed my kudu decals......and had OSVs move to let me past. Other vehicles then tried to move in from behind, but were stopped by other guests......so I got through after about 10min delay.

Sightings during camp were good.....2 leopards, ellies (some on the walks), rhinos, kudus, giraffes, nyalas, bushbuck, duiker, lots of birds (one of the guests was a serious birder and helps arrange the weekends). Nothing dangerous at any point....unless you count the invasion of orb-web spiders! They were everywhere and we had to duck around webs constantly. Heard hippos and lions a lot from camp too.

We had quite a bit of rain the first night, so only started walking late which meant it was really hot and quite hard going by the time we finished. The second morning was better as we could start earlier, and today we did a shorter walk from camp itself.

I am sure I was born to do this.....!

The down-side is the mountain of office work now I am back! Only left the office well after 6pm tonight. Have a lot to do tomorrow.....bind the manuals, then prepare and print out and staple handouts for 2 days' worth of lectures, plus prepare one myself - have the basics but a lot needs updating.

But then.....I will have 4 nights at Letaba, including a day trip to Punda for a meeting, and some bush-bashing to look forward to!

Done about third of the laundry, and had a cold shower to try and cool down.....now a cold drink too. Need to get something to eat, but uninspired at present.

What about a tuna dish? Take two tins of tuna and mix that with mayonnaise, chopped gherkins and small cubes of cheese. You can spice it up with a little bit of tomato sauce or chopped chillies. Put it the fridge to cool down and serve it on toast or plain bread.

Tuna I have, bread I have......and some tinned tomatoes......but it would be too much for one meal and I really don't want to eat tuna and tomato for the next few days...... Later when it is cooler I will do something like cheese on toast. Should be getting a bigger fridge in 2 weeks time which will help with meal variety.

Fridge has cheese and bread (and cold drinks) - it is only a little thermo-cooler so does not hold much. Otherwise eggs, pasta, tuna, corned beef, tinned tomatoes (various sorts), tinned sweetcorn, few sauce packets, and some Idahoan mash potato packets. Not much space in a caravan!!!!

Oh and the freezer has ice-cream, some chops, mince and frozen veggies.

No wood or charcoal......I do not braai when on my own as I think it is a waste of fuel. And it is too hot for a fire anyway..... But might defrost a chop and stick it in the griller. No tomato and onion for the braai broodtjie either. Actually will probably settle for cheese on toast or scrambled egg later on...... Will see....

In a nutshell..... I am an Honorary Ranger helping out as a full-time volunteer here. Because I am also a qualified guide it helps to have me on site to help with last minute activities etc. But as that does not take up all my time I also help with camp duties, gate duties at busy times, and spend most days working as an assistant to one of the managers (training courses, rifle proficiency assessments, leaflets, etc, etc). It is in this last role particularly that I get a bit of travelling in the park thrown in.

I am fortunate in being able to be happy in a crowd or on my own - and sometimes actually prefer being quiet and alone. There are staff here if the camp is unoccupied by guests, but often there are folk around, and I do the rounds at times checking that folk are OK and answering questions etc. Then there are the drives......and I really enjoy sharing with guests..... So all in all......a good life at the moment!
