We have 2 LBJ's for ID.

Both from Kgalagadi.





Gut instinct say Sabota on the second. Could BOTH be Sabotas? Totally confusing myself.

Guinea Pig, to me they both look like Fawn-coloured Larks.

Really tough. The one with the thick bill, one would want to lean towards Bradfield's, but everything else says Fawn-coloured.

The other bird is in a very strange posture. But the feint breast streaking probably rules out Sabota Lark. I think Matt is spot on here.

Fawn is good with me! New tick.

3 More. By now the larks have me "so deurmekaar soos 'n verkleurmannetjie op 'n Smartie Box"! I am thoroughly confused. They all look the same to me!

These were of the same bird. Very far off in the veld. It's a wonder you can even make out details on it at all.

This one has me totally I haven't a clue, really, what it might be -- chat? warbler? flycatcher? Or am I missing something obvious?

Hi Arks, I may be corrected but your bird looks like a female sunbird, but which one I could not say with any certainty. Look at the answers for the Bird ID Challenge #1 for 2013, posted by adrianP today.

GP, I think the first one is also a Fawn Coloured Lark. The second one is a Sabota (Bradsfield) Lark and the last one looks like a Lark-like Bunting.

I'm with WTM on this one. The long decurved bill had me a bit confused, but after screening a bunch of pictures on the web, there appears to be quite a bit of variation on the bill length in this species. Yours probably represents the upper limit for this range.

Thanks WTM and adrianp Definitely never thought of a robin! I unfortunately don't have a side view of this bird, I agree that that would have helped.

@adrian: thanks for the interesting info about the bird's bill, because that was one of the puzzling features of this particular bird. I'm always learning something new here!

I'd first thought that this was a marico flycatcher, but now I'm thinking that it may rather be a Karoo chat? See at Mokala in late October 2012.

Can anyone identify this youngster? I took this pic a couple of days ago at Rondevlei in Cape Town.
There were common waxbills in a nearby tree but this doesn't look like any juvenile I can find.

Looks like Spotted Flycatcher, Arks.

Granjan, the Pin-tailed Whydah parasitizes Common Waxbills. This looks like a young Pin-tailed Whydah.
