Green-back heron at same spot......

Think it was wondering what we were doing!

And then had a bit of interaction with a water monitor.....

This is tedious! I have to go back to my 'library' and click on each photo in turn to get the link when it reloads on a new page....but will keep going for a while.

It has been a very wet day. Did manage to see tsessebe, ellies, buffs, warthogs, waterbuck, impala, zebs, wildebeest, ground hornbills (twice) and just outside camp there were lions too.

We are at Olifants for 2 nights now, in bungalow 2 next to restaurant, so a nice river view. River is full - but not as bad as Letaba river which is so high it has flooded the bridge and closed the Phalaborwa-Mopani tar road.

We are eating at the restaurant tonight. If the internet speed picks up and I have time will try to post more photos, but it is very slow at present.

The rain came down in torrents.......!!!! All night long.....and realistically we knew our planned trip was now doomed and we could not get to any of the sites we needed to visit etc.....so after a quick clean and revamp of the display at Olifants we got on the road south. The rest of the party are now at BnD and I am back in the caravan (which needed a bit of TLC and water removing from roof of tent, broken poles replacing, etc) but now sorted out.

It was actually a very good sightings day! Lots of storks about, impalas (including a mum with late arriving newborn), mating lions, another large pride sleeping on both sides of the road (all 'flat lines'), several ellies (one a bit stroppy), rhinos, warthogs, zebs, wildebeest, giraffes, sable, duiker, klipspringer, kudu........

Rivers flowing strongly, but evidence that levels have dropped a little. We only had rain towards the end of the trip, and a sharp shower about an hour ago.

Will try to make sense of it all and post more photos later (maybe only tomorrow).....need to eat and drink and get to bed......

Did a sunset drive for BnD tonight. Limited choice of route!!!! Still had a good time with impalas, scrub hares, giraffes, zebs (a special request from one lady - and we got them twice!), buffalo, lots of rhinos, 2 separate genets, 2 spotted eagle owls, lots of nightjars......

Thought the ellies might be visiting when I got home, but no sign of them. We are trying to make sure all marulas on the outside of the fence to discourage them now. Fortunately the season seems to be almost over.

The drive was for just 4 guests, and was relatively quiet. We started with a small herd of zebras, and then had impalas, scrub hares, rhinos a-plenty, ellies, hippos.....and lots of nightjars. On my way home I had a white-tailed mongoose and spotted eagle-owl.

Did a night drive last night......fairly quiet for most of the time. We found a nice grouping of impalas and zebs that we spent some time with, also scrub hares, hippos, and plenty of nightjars, plus duikers and steenbok. The highlight though was coming across a young male lion (still something of a mohican mane) lying on the road. He was a bit skittish though and moved into the grass, but still close enough to get good views and some of the guests got good photos from their higher view point. A short while later we found a lioness coming towards us on the road.....she was much more cooperative, and I was able to turn the vehicle and we followed her for a while.

Tonight I was supposed to be doing a bush braai, but Raymond called me a short while ago to ask me to do a night drive instead.

Quiet drive but good sightings.....Impalas and scrub hares of course, bushbabies, spotted eagle owl, buffalo, ellie, rhinos, hippos, and the lioness I saw last night close to the same place.

Got back to camp and saw gate was open......and then saw an ellie in camp under the marula to the left of the gate (other side from my caravan). Let section ranger know and then drove vehicle round to chase it.......and after a bit of threatening behaviour he left via the gate and I followed to close it. Then I saw the chain had been broken!!!! Managed to lock it anyway, watched by ellie...... Then tried throwing marulas out again to stop him coming back in.....and he tried a couple of threatening charges. Eventually positioned the vehicle with lights on to him and continued throwing out marulas. He left!!!!! I won!!!!!

But I had to give up in the end as the bending and stretching was beginning to make me feel dizzy....it was hot and sticky work too. Hopefully he will not be back. The fence is damaged again near the tree too. Guess the gate chain proved much weaker than the fence! Also let Stephen know.....

Will get a new padlock and keys for all tomorrow as I have to go to Nelspruit for an eye appointment (post surgery). The fence has been repaired again, and the chain on the gate - might get a short length of stronger chain too.

Last night 2 camp-sites and 3 bungalows occupied. I did warn the second lot of campers to arrive that they should not camp near the gate or any marula tree!

More ellie trouble last night. I tried to listen for them, but did not actually hear them break in because of the fan going in the caravan. Heard staff talking though.....and eventually went out to find they had chased the ellies out twice already and were cross and upset. Called Stiephen and section ranger......and eventually had a bakkie with rangers turn up, but the ellies had gone away by then. They secured the gate with wire, and went. I hoped ellies would understand that they could not get in gate and so should not try the fence route again.......

But a little later it started to rain and we had a thunder storm. Not sure what happened ellie-wise!!!!!

Wet and overcast here this morning......

My eyes are fine......the niggle with the left eye we are going to try and overcome by using a low power contact lens to 'smooth out' the scarring on the cornea from the shingles last year. I have a new padlock and keys for the gate.....and staff are busy raking up marulas at the moment....unfortunately within an hour or so there will be more on the ground!!!!

There are a lot of the marula trees in camp so chopping them down is not really an option......we would be left with little shade in some areas.

Went to bed earlier than I have managed the past few days, and slept well, so not sure yet what happened overnight. It did rain a bit though....
