Hey Val

Ive been thinking of Dasie all day I think dasie sensed the rain coming and evacuated to higher ground I think he will come back when the weather has calmed down, they say that animals can sense heavy rain coming wayyyyy before any human can so I think he has run and in hiding in a safe place :)

Lets hope so, but his crevice is already quite high up in the rocks.

It has just about stopped raining at the moment...........with high winds, so that may start to dry things out a bit. Having said that, our forecast today is for more heavy rain!!!

Val, I'm  for some nice sunny weather for you. I see on the flood thread that the river is now flowing over the high water bridge at Letabe. :(

Day 80 (Jan 19th)
Part 2-The Journey home.
.................we could not believe our eyes!!! The amount of water in the Letaba River was phenomenal!!

We had been there a few days ago, and the river was trickling, with the majority of the area just a dry river bed!!

Now the river was running very fast and covered the whole area. The grassy areas were now completely under water!!

There were a few birds on the water's edge including a Goliath Heron, a Grey Heron, an Egret, and several Blacksmith Lapwings.

How different from the sight that normally greeted us here!! Gone were the Waterbuck, Impala, Zebra and Kudu that we often saw grazing nearby, and there was no sign of the Ellie or Buff herds that we often saw in the distance.

The water level was very high, but as yet the causeway was still passable. We have more heavy rain forecast for the weekend, so I don't know what the next day or two will bring!!

By now it was already raining, and so we decided to make our way back to Phala Gate and some lunch.

On the way we saw a lovely old Buff having a mud bath, some lady waterbucks and a family of Maribous.

After we arrived back at the cottage, it rained constantly for 38 hours, so I really dread to think what the Letaba River levels are at the moment.............I just pray that everyone in the park will keep safe.

If weather permits, we will drive to Letaba later today to see how things are.

To be continued...................

Although the Letaba river bed is already that wide it is incredible to see the amount of water flowing down

Despite the rain you had some nice sightings - Love the Goliath heron, the buffie and the waterbuck.

Thanks Val for all your information from down there

Thanks for your updates on the flooding. Must be very awe inspiring to be there and see it in person.  Hope the rain has eased off by now.

Love your pic showing the difference in size of the Goliath and Grey herons. I came over that causeway in November and there wasn't a great deal of water then. In fact I took a pic of the sign saying "No throughfare when bridge is flooded" - no doubt some would try ....

We had a wet weekend too, but today it was lovely - and back at work when I could have had washing out on the line. :wall: :wall: :D

You are certainly seeing a very different side to the park Val.

Val I have just had the most enjoyable evening reading your TR.  Although I have read and commented on bits in the past I decided that tonight was the night to read all 67 pages. It has been wonderful sitting in the snow in the UK and able to experience your amazing journey with you and I look forward to further instalments, although I also need to make a start on my TR sometime.
