Hi Niall,

Thanks for the correction. (I'd ruled LTPW out due to all my references showing this bird as having a "clean" striped head, cheek and throat, but was not happy with the bill colour).

Anyone know what this is? Also photographed in the Kruger National Park unfortunately I cant remember many details as this was a few years ago it was by itself and it had striking colours it is the bird in the circle in front of the Sparrows, there is also a Purple Roller in the left corner, any guesses will be appreciated!

Well..... It's a very small pic of the bird, but at a guess I'd say Long tailed Paradise Whydah in transitional plumage?

Cheers

Niall.

I saw this one 18 months ago in a reserve in north eastern Botswana, near the Chobe river.

I thought it was a burnt necked eremomela, but in looking it up as we are creating a file of photographed birds, I saw it was nothing like it. But what is it?

Looks like Long-tailed Paradise Whydah BB :D Then again you may get Broad-tailed PW in that area as well, but the tail does not look broad enough in this case.

I agree with TrevorC ID, but not with his reasoning. The tail on this bird is still growing and can therefor not serve as diagnostic feature. The back of the neck is nicely shown in one of you pix and the lack of red in that area (straw-coloured instead) is diagnostic of Long-tailed paradise whydah.

Both species occur in that neck-o-the-woods.
