Back at the camp, we started a fire and settle down with a frostie. We had offered Franco dinner and were trying to have it ready a bit earlier that our usual 8.30 to 9.00 pm. Well, we managed and it was around 8.00 pm when we gave Franco signs that dinner would be ready for collection. But as we were standing there at the braai, this came to the waterhole and postponed the whole dinner idea for a few minutes 8)

Image

The leopard was followed by an AWC which in turn was followed by the brownie which in turn was followed by one of the males that we had seen earlier up the road.

Image

It had been a busy half an hour!!! The lion had walked 3.8 k’s within less than 2 hours we concluded. Once he had finished his business at the waterhole he started calling for his family. The calls between the 5 of them proceeded throughout the night and left us with sleepy eyes the next morning...

Other sightings of the day

Not much, but seeing that we only travelled 5k’s up the road and back again three times that day it’s not really surprising.

We did get to see 6 kudus on the GK access road though. Here is one of them:

And the usual GK bird gallery:

Awesome Lion sighting Lionspoon! That adorable little one is not as sleepy as his dad! He is the cutest little thing!
The little one certainly is very cute but he always tried to copy his dad doing the sleeping thing. But every movement in the cars got him alert again. Shame, he didn't have any siblings. Might have made for some good interaction.

Day 6
26/10/2012 Grootkolk

After having kept up awake half of the night we had to watch the lions (all of the family had arrived by the time we got up) disappear into the dunes northwards. :slap: We should not see them again. :( Still we decided not to go out yet and were rewarded with the brownie finally coming back to the waterhole in daylight

Image

Our wonderful daytime brownie sighting was put to an abrupt end by one of the neighbours who dropped a box lid very loudly during the process of packing up… :slap:    (Said neighbour however came to apologize for the mishap before leaving the camp.)

Ready to run off

Image

I was still marveling at the sighting of the last 24 hours when a slender mongoose appeared in our fenced area and tried to catch a plated lizard. WOW, an attempted kill and I didn’t even have to leave the camp! It all went so fast that I couldn’t even consider getting the camera, let alone taking a photo of the incident.

We had another brownie at night. Actually we trailed it back to the camp when we returned from our afternoon drive 8)

Image

This one must be the older brownie and it’s way more relaxed compared to the young one in the morning. It certainly wasn’t fussed by the noises in the camp and there were quite some as everybody was preparing dinner and plates and cutlery could be heard clashing all over the place.

We also saw some BEFs in the riverbed, but the BEFs weren’t too cooperative so far as they remained far away from my camera.

In the evening the brownies took turns and appeared three more times and took turns at the waterhole with an AWC and a cape fox.

The next day we were off to Nossob...

Day 7
27/10/2012 Grootkolk to Nossob

We woke up at 5.30 am to our daily dose of brownie. We also heard the lions roar in the dunes behind the camp but they didn’t show. Still we decided to take it slow and not to go and hunt them down right there and then as we didn’t want to spend too much time in the car before heading down to Nossob as we wouldn’t be able to check in before 1 pm anyway.

But eventually we were all sorted and the car packed minus the fresh stuff (as our fridge in the car had packed up earlier), so we decided to have a look. We still heard the lions calling and could tell exactly where they should be. Just a pity that there were dunes that obstructed our view… We met another camp guest who had stayed for the night and was on his way to the Bots side. He asked us if we had seen the lions and we told him what we knew. His answer was: “Just head up the dunes. You got a 4-wheel drive. This is Africa!” Very weird once again and I’m still not sure if he was serious or not. But I reckon he was… :slap:

The whole day remained actually VERY quiet. Once again we opted north first for our morning drive before turning around and making our way to Nossob. Funnily enough, we heard yet another lion roar somewhere in the dunes in the very same area where we had first met the Grootkolk family. Weird again. We hadn’t heard so many lions calling in one trip. Anyway, it didn’t take long for us to locate the guy as he came leisurely strolling down the dunes and onto the road to look for the bed that he could use for the rest of the day.
