As 2012 draws to an end I thought it would be fun to start a thread about your top/most memorable sightings for 2012. I am not 100% convinced this is the correct place for this thread but I am sure the moderators will move it if there is a more appropriate place.

1. Leopard vs wild dogs
We left Lower Sabie at 6am and headed north on the H4-1 and 20 minutes later we came across 2 Wild dogs running south along the road. We did a u turn and slowly followed them with one other car along the road. At this point we were thinking what a great sighting! Both us and the other car were so fixated on the dogs in the road that neither of us noticed the Leopard right next to us. We were stationary when the Leopard exploded from right next to the car and chased after the dogs. She charged at full pace towards the Wild dogs but when she got a few meters from them they noticed and turned to face her. She stopped suddenly and crouched flat on the road. At this point the wild dogs appeared to be ‘excited’ if anything. They were jumping all over the place and particularly on their back legs. After a few minutes the Wild dogs started to run down the road again only to find that the Leopard pursued them as if they were pray. When she got too close they would stop and the whole process was repeated. After about 15 minutes of this dance a car arrived from the opposite direction. Eventually the Wild dogs ran past the car. At this point the Leopard lost sight of the dogs and lost interest. The whole event lasted about 30 minutes which flew by at the time.

2. Zebra fight
We did not find much game in the surrounding area and so decided to go and site at Mooiplaas waterhole for the last couple of hours of sunlight. A zebra fight broke out and lasted well over an hour. I have seen several zebra fights in the past but none were as bloody or violent as this. The dominant stallion was chased continuously and eventually collapsed in a bloody heap. Interestingly the victor was smaller which probably gave him the advantage in such a long battle.

5. Cheetah hunts
We found 3 cheetahs having a rest next to the road. They made several hunting attempts but they were all unsuccessfully. To our astonishment after each attempt they walk back towards us and take up there place next to our car. Eventually they were chase off by a troop of baboons

6. Eagle vs Vultures
We found a bateleur eagle right next to the road eating a rabbit. As soon as we stopped it flew off but we decided to wait and see if it returned. It was our lucky day! Not long after we had stopped it returned, but each time a car turned up it flew off again but no one was as patient as us and as soon as the cars left he would returned. Suddenly we were surrounded by up to 20 vultures circling the eagle! Before we knew it a vulture swopped in and scared off the bateleur eagle but before he had a chance to eat the kill a tawny eagle swooped in and scared off the vulture. Unfortunately he soon got scared off by all the other vultures arriving and so flew away carrying a small part of the rabbit, possibly the intestines. Bizarrely the vultures all just sat around and watched the rabbit but no one ate it. After a while all the vultures flew off.

7. Hippos fight
A proper hippo fight has been on my wish list for many years and although neither was injured it was definitely not a play fight!

8. Lions hunt
We watch two lionesses at the Sweni Waterhole lying in wait for a heard of Zebras. The lions were out in the open against a concrete wall but the wind was in their favour and amazingly none of them spotted the threat.

9. Hyena clan joining us for a braai
As we started our braai at Tamboti we were joined by 4 Hyenas hoping for a hand out. They soon got bored and decided to go to sleep next the fence.
