How succesful are predators in their hunting activities , and how often do the prey " get away " ?

In October 2012 , whilest driving along the Orpen road , when this " lucky " zebra came walking out of the bush and crossed the road right in front of us . As can be seen , he had a huge chunk bitten out of his rump , and even his tail was somewhat shortened . The gaping would was still very fresh , and surprisingly , relatively clean looking . It appeared that no maggots had yet settled in it , and maybe one of his pals had been licking it clean ?

I wonder how it has healed since we saw it :hmz:

Oh shame, that looks very painful Okie! We also had a similar sighting a few years back. The wound was a little bit lower and not so big. It looked like a Lion ripped a piece of meat off while trying to catch the Zebra. :(

But I'm glad he got away!

I am sure they lick each other's wounds to keep it clean.

I think zebras and buffalo are probably the ones who get away the most often .
Here's another zebra that got away , and whose scars are healing very nicely :) Seen in September 2011 near Gudzani on the S41 .

Err... BTW , the very tip of his tail had also been bitten off

eina

I remember seeing a little Zebra foul very close to Satara. It was still shivering in terror after what had been an unsuccessful attack. I did wonder what had happened to the mother, or whether the mother had become lunch.

It is very difficult to push these things out of the mind.

I have also seen the odd zebra that has got away, but retains the battle scars.

They seemed not to be distressed.

On the other hand, I saw a young lion a few years ago south of Satara that had a broken leg and was in great distress. Just a matter of time......
