Hi everyone

Just wanted to share a little moment we had today.

We have been fascinated by these magnificent birds since our first sighting a couple of years ago.

This trip we have learned two new things about them

Firstly ...no laughing here...that they can fly, we had no idea they could get off the ground.

Secondly very early this morning we came across nesting Ground Hornbills in a tree on the S100. They were "singing" together in unison. and the sound was just beautiful and very unusual, almost sounded tribal.

We were lucky to capture it on video.

So we feel that it was a privilege to witness this and wondered if it is something that is commonly seen and heard??

I must admit to also being stunned to see them fly the first time.

Would love to hear the sound. I've heard them booming over the veld, which is quite something. Hope you can share the video when you get home.

I've seen ground hornbills flying on several occasions -- and also admit to being surprised the first time! -- but I've never heard them "singing" (and rarely the "booming" that saraf mentions), so am eager to see your video  8)

I've never seen them flying and I've never heard what they sound like, booming or singing. I've sat and watched them scratching around in the dust a lot. So, I thought I'd check if the Sasol Bird App (IPAD) has the call. Lo and behold it doesnt even list the bird. So, looking forward to the video.

I looked under alphabetical, " H " in index on the right hand column, and it is listed under Southern Ground Hornbill.

I have the app on my tablet and it comes under Southern Ground Hornbill. Love to hear the call in the early morning, seems to travel for ever :)

I have seen them flying before and must admit they do so with relative ease for such large birds.
Have also heard their usual booming call and it's pretty distinctive once you know it.
But would love to hear the singing sound.
You Tube would be the easiest way to go VicRob.
