In May/June, I agree with the above poster -
Layers are KEY!
In the morning it is going to be VERY cold, especially if you are outdoors!
Until around 10am, you will need warm clothes with you.
Between around 11-3 or 4, you will be comfortable in light pants or shorts, and light long tops or tshirts.
From 4pm onwards, warm clothes again! :-)
The weather can get up to around 25 degrees, so if this is warm enough to swim in for you, then by all means go ahead :-).

only khaki shorts, khaki short sleeve shirt and a hat with sandals why not?

Jacqui and Sue, thanks so much for the info, I am shocked to hear that I will need a heavy jacket, would never have thought that, so layers it is, hope we can fit it all in our bags

Maybe you wont need such a heavy jacket - I see you are from Canada and we probably have a different idea of what is cold to what you do.
I do know that it was 0° a couple of mornings - especially at places like Skukuza - so you will have to be the judge of how thick a jacket you need for that temp.
Bearing in mind however that you will be in your car at 5.30am and there is a huge chill factor that comes as the sun rises above the horizon - you don't want to be shivering and miss the beauty of that.

Thanks Sue, I think a nice warm sweater should do the trick, and as you said in the early morning we will be in the car, its really from say 11am until about 2pm that we might be walking around the camp or sitting at a picknick spot. thanks again for your help.

In all the older photo’s of Kruger I have seen the people, gents and ladies, dressed in very heavy looking clothing which I think was incredibly hot. Today we wear light and airy clothing which is suitable and comfortable for the Kruger weather but I cannot help but how those poor people of yesteryear coped with the heat and sweat (from the heat) with possibly no air coming through those heavy clothes. I guess one of the blessings of modern times in Kruger is the freedom to dress as light and cool as possible during the heat of summer.

There is a thread somewhere with photos of Kruger visistors 60 years ago. They even made fire and braaied with a tie and jacket Even the radio people were that formal. One of the older radio presenters mentioned how he put on his dinner jacket and bow tie to work when he hosted a programme with opera music.

Eeekkk I would not have coped as shorts and t-shirts and sandals/flip-flops are perfect for me even during daytime in the winter months. Tie and jacket at the braai on some of the older photos it looks like they even wore heavy velle complete with hats on .

A question for the ladies about something which I can't figure out myself. The typical visitor and for that matter, the typical female hiker wear some sort of pants which are neither long, nor short. It is normally dark green and a seam between the knees and the ankles. If a man wears something like that on a hike, he may be seen as a poefter. So, what purpose does the long short pants or is it the short long pant have? It is too long for good ventilation and too short for proper protection against spinnerjasies. Fashion maybe? They say the fashion clothing is so ugly that they have to change is every 6 months.

LOL Rooies they call them Knee highs and Ive got to agree with you that doesn't make for much protection but they are cool to wear you really don't get that hot in them

You are walking close to "I am going to be donnered" territory. But I will refrain from calling Sterkpiet and oom Kaspaas to sort you out.

Going to Nampo properly dressed is a bit of an art. I have tried it several times but they have spotted me from a mile away. To pass though the Cattle Baron's gates without paying, you have to dress as follows. From the top (before I continue, everything must be properly warn and sprinkled with a bit of dust) OK firstly is a camouflaged 'Panar' seed baseball cap. Then a two tone cotton shirt with a 'Skettery Kraal boerdery' logo embroidered on it. Then a pair of denim shorts with a 3 inch wide leather belt. The denim pants is not Levi's. It is sommer ko-operasie brand. The pants must not have long sleeves. Longs sleeved shorts (those that reaches down to your knees) are for the poefters from Man U. The leather belt must have a solid brass buckle with the Transvaal Landbou Unie badge on. O did I forget to mention the Leatherman Wave attached to your belt.

Then we go down to the boots which must be made by CAT. Common old vellies are out. With the boots you wear Rugby socks and preferably a red one on one foot and a blue one on the other.

All this means nothing if you are as lily white as an escapee from a Gulag in Siberia. And your soft, pink, Parker pen hands will not help either.

To emphasize how macho you are, drop your knife in a pile of cow dung, wipe it clean against your pants and continue slicing the biltong.
