Hi Everyone -

I have six nights from 4 Dec in which to get my fix of birding and would like some suggestions on where to go, apart from KNP.

It must be no more than six hours drive (at 120km/h) from JHB and must have camping.

Ideas?

I think the best would be for you to tell us what you would like to see and then we take it from there. :thumbs_up:

Yeah, that is a good starting point, there is so much to see and do within 500K's of Gauteng.

For birding, I've heard Marekele is wonderful. I've been there myself - they have great camping (unfenced). Marakele is SANParks though.

Non-SANParks, I'd try Pilansberg. I've been there as well - have not camped though. Lots of roads to drive, dam, few waterholes - should be good for birding.

As a non bird watcher, that's all I have for you.

Thanks for the feedback folks...

Please don't be confused by the second post: I'm not after non-SANPARKS advice specifically. I think Dotty wants to separate nonSANP (into pm box) from SANP replies (into this thread)

Now, what am I looking for? No specific species, though lifers are a bonus,; a camping venue; the aforementioned distance from JHB. Easy! :whistle:

You seriously don't know Mkuzi?? :big_eyes:

It's a game reserve near St Lucia in N. Natal which has more species in one spot than any other place in Southern Africa. (Birds of course)

It's 5-6 hours away, but I'll continue past it to stay at Umziki Pan and then visit Mkuzi as a day visitor...

Well, as you said earlier, you're not a birder and it's mainly for birds that people visit, but it's a wonderful (simple) reserve, where you avoid all of the moegoes you find in the more 'trendy' parks. Close to Sodwana, Hluluwe, Ponto D'Oro and tonnes more.

Put it on your bucket list. (in pencil if you have to!)

PS Nothing beats KNP. Period.
