Hi Naomi

This bird looks like a young Afican pipit.

A few more that I'm not quite sure about :hmz: all seen along Darling Hills Road in late December 2012.

2. I first thought that this was an African pipit, but now I'm wondering whether it may rather be a longbilled pipit?

Yarwell... these things take time...

The second bird is ALSO a juvenile bird which makes the ID doubly difficult: usually the pink tinge to the bill would clinch the ID as long-billed, but in juv African, the bill also shows some pink. Cryptically the hind claw is hidden... that would give away the ID in a flash! I need more time... Or another picture!

Does this help at all? And to help me in future, what would be the difference between the hind claws?

Hi KobusF

I say you are correct with the first two ID's.
