Good evening

I took tid pic in KTP middel winter last year

Image

The consensus is that it is a Steppe Buzzard

Has anyone seen one of these in winter in Southern Africa ?

Nope, no steppe buzzards are known to overwinter, but a juvenile Jackal buzzard does

There are occasional reports of overwintering Steppe Buzzards, although very rarely, and most of the time they do turn out to be juv Jackal Buzzards. This bird is definitely a youngster due to its yellow eye, but it's tough to tell from this photo whether it's a young Jackal or Steppe Buzzard. Both would actually be an unusual sighting, as it is rare to see a Steppe Buzzard in the middle of winter, but it's also very rare to find a Jackal Buzzard in the KTP. The white on the flanks worries me a bit for Jackal Buzzard. Do you have any more shots of this bird Sky?

That did cross my mind, but that wouldn't show a yellow cere, would it? I don't have any books with me at the moment, so will have to check up on this bird properly when I get home.

I'm thinking that Sky would have figured it out as chating goshawk on his own whilst looking at the bird for a while and taking pictures :hmz:

Looking at the SABAP2 distribution data, JB is a more likely option than AHE... for what its worth.

Hi Sky, I didn't know you took this photo in Winter! As you say it's a different story then...
Here is another view of the bird you send me and the yellow eye as I mentioned before as well as the barring on the secondaries show that this is a juv. JB and not a Steppe Buzzard.

Yip, no barring on the flanks, definite JB. Great sighting for the KTP!

here's one from my recent trip to KNP - tawny eagle?

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/99/bild1w.png/

filmed on Oct 14 near Satara

btw: I tried to embed the picture but whatever I do, I always get an error message "it was impossible to determine the dimensions" (and yes, I initially did resize the picture)
