"But sometimes you have to go for it in life. If you just sit around thinking, then nothing ever happens." Lawrence Anthony wrote in his book, 'The Last Rhinos'.

KZN artist, Gill Mittins, has decided to 'go for it' . Gill donated her painting, "Rhino", inspired by Lawrence Anthony, to SANParks to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino, and to raise funds for the fight against poaching. And now, you too can do more than 'thinking'; you can 'go for it' and play a role in the fight against rhino poaching.

In honour of the rhino which have been butchered in South Africa this year, and previous years, you can donate R10 and select any available number between 1 - 1000. A donation of R100 allows for a selection of 12 numbers. At the end of October 2012, a random number between 1 - 1000 will be drawn by a SANParks official. The person who selected the number drawn by SANParks, will become the proud owner of the painting "Rhino".

Please read here for further details.

This fund raiser will be managed by the SANParks Honorary Rangers - Virtual Region and and all the funds raised will be ploughed into counter poaching. No admin, or other, costs will be deducted from the monies raised.

About the artist

Gill by ForumAdmin, on Flickr

Gill was born in Scotland, spent her teenage years in Gloucestershire and moved to Spain when she was 18. She has lived in South Africa since 1984. She moved from Johannesburg to Umhlanga Rocks (KZN) in 2000.

In addition to ‘accidentally’ qualifying as an English language teacher, massage therapist, recruitment consultant and Lifeline counsellor, Gill was involved in the property market for some 25 years. She can’t decide what to be when she grows up, so she’s keeping her options open!

Gill started painting in 2000 and was amazed to find that people liked her work enough to buy it! She reckons her artistic abilities are directly proportional to the amount of red wine she consumes whilst painting and she’s going to keep on practising until she gets the formula exactly right! She has raised substantial amounts of money for various charities through the sale of her paintings.

Currently, Gill works in La Lucia (Durban) as Personal Assistant to the Directors of a MPC Recruitment, a national company. She loves travelling to far-flung places, spending time in the African Bush, renovating houses and life in general. She has also written and submitted one novel and is working on her second one.

Gill has been divorced twice, describes herself as being ‘happily single’ at the moment, and hopes that George Clooney will appear on her doorstep one day soon! Her son is an accountant in the Cayman Islands, and her daughter is a former nature conservationist who now works as a freelance photojournalist for various travel and wildlife magazines.

Gill was motivated to paint “Rhino” after meeting Lawrence Anthony at a Rotary function and reading his 3 books. This painting is a tribute to his efforts to protect our wildlife throughout his life.

DinkyBird wrote:The how to:
1. For every R10 donated, the donor must selected an available number between 1 - 1000, or for R100 twelve available numbers.

2. Donors may pledge to donate, and select available numbers when making this pledge in this topic; however, the number(s) will only be reserved for 4 days. Payment must be received within 4 days of the pledge.

3. Monies must be paid to the central SANParks Honorary Rangers bank account, or via GivenGain (for overseas donors). To obtain the banking details and to submit your selected numbers, please PM either DinkyBird or Lion Queen, or email virtualhrs@gmail.com , or send a message on Facebook to Dalene Preston or Isabel Taljaard.

4. The painting is acrylic on a 600 x 600 stretch canvas on a 40 mm deep frame. If it has to be sent overseas it can be taken off the stretcher and rolled up in a tube. The recipient will have to either frame the painting or replace the stretcher.

Edit: - Please note that in order to comply with the with the National Lotteries Act of 1997 and its accompanying regulations, we have needed to drop the price of the ‘tickets’ from R20 to R10 each.

Dear Mites and VHRs

Only today and tomorrow left!

We saw beautiful Rhinos on our trip earlier this month and it made me so sad knowing that they are not safe. And it made me very angry that I could not yell it out to the world right there and then because we could not risk revealing the Rhinos locations to the :eviltreath: bad poachers! It's also hard to wright the trip report around the Rhino sightings and to come up with creative ways to post the pictures not jeopardizing their safety. I came up with some beautiful sepia shots in my TR.

I already donated R100 to the VHR Rhino project and to honour of the beautiful Rhinos we saw on our recent trip I will pledge another R400 to the VHR Rhino project!

Not everybody can join an anti-poaching patrol unit with guns blazing or go to the far east and take out the dealers, but you can support a local Rhino project who can make it happen. Then maybe in the distant future we can talk and post pics and locations of the Rhino again, knowing that they are safe!
