I will be in Kgalagadi for almost a week in Mid June. I'm hoping to get some (photograph) some of beautiful raptors there but wondering about the season. Here in the states our raptors migrate but in the desert, where I live, there are still many species during winter. Any advice on other birds and areas I should go in the off season would be much appreciated.
Stan

Hi there

There should still be plenty of Raptors about in Kgalagadi during winter time

Tawny Eagle, Martial Eagle, Black Chested Snake-Eagle, Lanner Falcon, Red Necked Falcon, Verraux's Eagle Owl, Barn Owl, White Faced Scops Owl, Pygmy Falcon, Secretary Bird, Bateleur, Lappet Faced Vulture, White Headed Vulture and Black Shouldered Kites should all be there when you go.

Enjoy ;)

You left out brown snake eagle DD.

Also you should see a lot of kori bustards, the world's heaviest flying bird, although not a raptor, impressive none the less.

Thanks guys, really looking forward to it. Do you guys have some favorite routes to take in the park??

Also I checked out your facebook page, nice shots! I did a double take on the trogan, we have one here in AZ (more of a Mexican species that just comes across our border) that is almost a dead ringer.

You have more chance of seeing bigfoot than a trogon in Kgalagadi....

elosonegro,
You would probably see a lot of Raptors in June as almost all the Raptor species in the Kgalagadi are resident and most of them starts breeding during the colder months May-Sept.

Best areas are the drinking places especially the bore holes south of Mata-Mata and then the drinking areas around Nossob camp, but you can really see raptors all over the park! Be prepared for winter though as temps can drop to -10°C mid June. We in SA aren't used to cold weather like that!

See Here

The Kgalagadi is also a very good place to see owls. They normally have different species roosting in the camps. Just ask the staff at reception, as they normally knows what's going on..
Verreaux's Eagle Owl normally in Tweeriveren Camp
Southern White-faced owl can be in Nossob and Mata-Mata camp
African Scpos owl normally in Nossob
Western Barn owl normally in Tweeriveren camp
Spotted Eagle owl south of Mata-mata camp

Regards
Lizet
