The aim of this quiz.

Nungu wrote:
Ok, after some thinking I have decided to start the Googleprufe Readers Quiz.

But as an open quiz - to ensure it's survival. The idea is to post questions about facts that the quiz master found in a book that he/she has read. Preferably something that can not be found on the internet (Googleprufe).

This is how it'll work (rules of the quiz if you like):

1. Open quiz - so anyone can post a question.
2. The subject is open - so anything interesting about wildlife and conservation.
3. It should, as far as possible, be Googleprufe.
4. Upon confirming the answers (or helping other poor souls out of their misery) the quizmaster must quote his source.
5. Sources can be any book, publication or magazine etc.

My aim with this is:
1. To get people reading
2. To help forumites identify books that they might be interested in. For instance a question is posed about Kruger names that I find interesting, and the quizmaster quotes his source as such an such a book... well I might just want to read some more about the subject and now know which book to look for.
3. We would all learn things that are'nt general (not on the internet).
4. This will be a slow-moving quiz with difficult questions - I accept that... but let's see how it goes.

Ready...
Steady...

GO!!!

Rooies, I'm wondering if you mean the only wild mammal? That's because, as far as I know, birds, reptiles, and fish never get the disease.

If this is the case, I'd say that Bats carry the disease, but are immune against its effects.

At Philip1 and OWN. My source says "The -------- is the only wild animal that is immune to rabies. Researchers studied several hundred --------- in the ------, Africa, for up to 13 years and discovered that ------ seem to be able to carry the virus without displaying the usual symptoms."

Phil, you are a star. I read this in the Guinness Book of Records 2006. It was also amazed to learn that.

Thanks all
Researchers believe that each individual Leopard accounts for approx .......kills a year in Kruger. They eat about ........of the carcass of the animal they kill. Plus minus .........kg of meat per Leopard per each year.

Fill in the dots pls 8)

:hmz: :hmz:

I'd think that a leopard kills every maybe 7-10 days in Kruger; so that is about 35-50 kills per year? This depends too, obviously, on what is being killed - if larger game, then maybe only a kill every two weeks - which will be only about 25 kills per year.

From what I've seen of leopard kills, I'd say they often leave a substantial portion; actually, now that I think of it, it could even be less than half. Okay then, let's say about 40% is consumed on average.

How many kilograms of meat per year? :hmz: I'd think that an active cat like a leopard should need about 10kg of good meat each week, so I'll say about 500kg per year. Mind you, if they eat 40% of a 40kg impala every ten days or so, that would work out at about 600kg. So, 500-600kg per year of good Kruger meat is my thumbsuck answer!

Own you are close.

Researchers believe that each individual Leopard accounts for approximately 20 kills a year in Kruger. They eat on the average about a third of the carcass of the animal they kill. Plus minus 400kg of meat per Leopard per each year. this means that Leopards probably need just over a kilogram of meat per day.

Thanks for the excellent Q, Philip.

I'd like to see the research, and the methodology behind it, as I'm sure there are many varying factors that will alter those numbers, and probably within a fair range! For example, what happens in time of drought versus times of plenty? Or a male leopard versus a female with cubs? Or a large kill like a zebra, or a small kill like a lizard (which is still a kill); or are they only talking about fair-sized mammals? And so on and so on. The figures are interesting, nevertheless, as I expected quite a higher kill frequency, while the meat mass required for such an active cat is only 1kg per day! If these figures are accurate, then I say that these data are amazing!!
