Not till May next year - Kruger again with Roodewal and Biyameti -such a loong wait!

so after 30 years of the Kruger, I am of to my first visit to the Kgalagdi in Decemeber staying at Mata Mata.
Is the echo route okay to do alone,
and were is the best area of the park to spot brown heyena?

I spotted 2 individuals, one almost in Twee Rivieren camp, the other near Auchterlonie.

But that is no guarantee at all, it just shows that they are present in the area.

Jesica we spotted a brownie at Mata-mata waterhole, right in front of the chalet. Luck was on our side, maybe you would also strike it lucky.

What echo route are you talking about?

Go on a night ride Jesica, they are mainly nocturnal.

I've seen Brown Hyaena at Twee Rivieren, Leeuwdril, Samevloeiing, Kij Kij, Dalkeith and Nossob so basically all over the park

Madach have had to brag(LOL) you have seen more brownies than what I have.

As the mites have said, Brown Hyena is nocturnal but can also be seen very early in the morning. The game drives currently are very productive and Brownies are seen on a regular basis.

The Eco trail you mention might be the Nossob 4x4 Eco trail, unfortunately you cannot drive that on your own as it is a three day guided trail.

If there is anything you still want to know please ask.

In about two weeks we will tour the park for the second time . On top of my wishlist (and probably that of many others) is a Leopard - on top of my husbands' are Suricates .

Does anyone - who travelled to the park recently- know of a colony where we might have a chance to spot these cute little animals?

September we got them South of Gemsbokplein, North of Auchterlonie, about midway. And just short of Leeudril.

Hi HH, I was in the park a month ago. Suricate colony - 13km outside Twee Revieren on the Nossob road. Look either side of the road. Late afternoon they are quite active.



I took this photo at this spot last year (a quick scan before they headed for their burrow for the night) and I found them there again a month ago.
And you can look out for a leopard in that area too, we were fortunate to find one not far from Leeudril.

Suricates......... The best time to find them is sunrise and just before sunset. It is cold in their burrows so as soon as the sun starts heating up they will come out to warm themselves and also before they go into their dens at night. I have seen so many around in the riverbeds. Just see what the weather does and keep your eyes wide open.

Also remember where they might have been seen a week ago that they might have moved site and might not be there anymore.

Not to discourage you but they are around, just make sure you look for them the right time of the day and you will be rewarded.

I have never seen a live scorpion in my entire life.
I'm not clued up about their behavior either. What are our chances of coming across them in December? Not to scream like a girl, to photograph one and have a good look at it.
Second question about scorpions - do we need to be careful when walking around at night and preferably wear shoes or flip-flops?

Then Red Romans.... Haven't seen one in many moons. Last was when I was a child in December on the West Coast and I remember being dead scared of them because they would run after our shadows in the middle of the day. Do we have a chance in either Augrabies or Kgalagadi of seeing them?
