My SO and I are heading up to Shingwedzi this weekend, and I was wondering if there have been any recent sightings of Pels around Pafuri lately? I would desperately love to see one and was wondering if it would be worth the drive up to Pafuri....

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Nattim , it is always worth driving up to Pafuri , but if a Pel's is your only interest , then you may as well stay where you are

nattim ,good Q ,
I'am also look with great interest for answers.
-I know there was a pair at Balule but did not know what happen with them after the floods.
-The forest area fever tree's etc. at crook's corner area must be ideal for them. Then also the Livubu-river is to my opinion also one of the senior river's.

I really didn't mean to sound like all we're interested in are Pels fishing owls... We will definitely be taking a day trip up to Punda to do some birding, Pafuri is just a long trip for one day from Shingwedzi, and I was just wondering if there was any information about the Pels... We always have lovely bird sighting in the northern park...

Stop at Pafuri picnic site, say hi to Frank and ask if he's seen them lately. If he has he will gladly share the info with you.

I think he's said in the past that he rarely sees them in winter but can get them near his house 4-6 times during the summer.

But it's always fun to go looking for them.

As I said , Pafuri is always worth a hingwedzi , despite the relatively long drive , hey , its only 90 km there , and 90 km back to Shing  Leave early and return late :)

But yes, going up to Pafuri picnicspot is always a huge pleasure. And Frank will tell fellow birders, and as a bonus may show you some really good ticks to boot.

Pel's Fishing-Owl can be found along the Levuvuh river. The trick is to be super patient and scan all the big trees along the riverbanks. This is no small feat, but a friend of mine and a member on this forum recently did just that and got rewarded with a sighting.

The Olifants river pair is perhaps gone for good after the damming up of the Olifants river.

Ai Scipio, you still at it I see. Funny that we have not yet seen a single photo proving these sightings you had. I am not sure what the real reason is behind you not wanting or not able to post these photos, but until you do so, you will have to take what you get, mate.

What challenge...?

Nattim,
a friend of mine saw the Pel's this past weekend along the Levuvu river but the guys from the Pafuri River lodge took them out to see. Must say it can be tricky spotting these owls and I think it depends a lot on the water level in the river unfortunately..so conditions could be great now! I would go there now if I where you.

Last year in November the levels where very low and despite a lot of effort from my side we couldn't find them in 2 days, we even looked for them on foot! I think they moved stream up from the Parks borders that time...
It was also around this time that they had the Orange-winged Pytilia at the Picnic spot so maybe you are lucky!

Cheers
Lizet

OK, short and simple:
3 Teams, 4 Lists, the loser buys the beer and the winner takes home the bragging rights.

The teams:

Team 1)The Stiffies/Rednecks/stifribbons/those funny guys, you know who I mean.

Team 2)The Appies/chasers/Biep-bieps, you know who I mean.

Team 3)Us normal guys.

I would have loved to add those dry ones, but they still think the world is flat and ends at Unions and. But Maybe one will read here. :wall:

The lists:

List 1)Birds(for the stiffies)

List 2)Big Game(For the appies)

List 3)Goggas(Just for fun)

List 4)Reptiles(For me)

Now we pick a time, the stiffies should like Nov/Dec and the appies would like winter, but I think summer is hot, cause the girls wear short skirts.
We also pick a spot, Stiffies would prefer North I am sure, Appies would take the south I am sure, but then the swinging vote for the teams is up to the normal ones.

3 Days, how bout it???????

Then we put a pricetag(Well, points) on some species like Pel’s, A lion Kil, Black Mamba, and tic the rest. And then as I said, the Loser buys the beer, and the winner gets bragging rights.

I'm a little bit lost with this challenge (language issue ?)
If i come back to the initial question, I was in Pafuri last beginning of may on a hiking trail with the famous "Brian" and one night we spotted a Pel's (so sorry no photo) by the Levuvuh river ,not far from the bridge on the road next to Pafuri lodge and the day after a nice Black mamba
(photo and video to show as soon as I will be able to upload them) (Brain issue ?)
A cording to Brian, this Black mamba was one of the longest he ever saw !
