Hi Arks

On the S3, heading from Numbi gate to Skuks. Seen on the 9th August this year. Time was just past 11:00 in the morning.

Well Noel

I think you are spot on with your ID

Always nice to put the juveniles in their place.

:funny:

Can anyone help with a possible ID for this raptor? It was very far away, so I know it's a long shot  as these images are very cropped. Seen at WCNP on 24 May 2012.

Hell Arks.. I am not going to lie to you, there isn't much too go on here. Very difficult to give a correct ID but I will take a guess in saying Juvenile Jackal Buzzard. I can't think of any other brown raptors present there that time of year.

Thanks, DD. I've never seen a jackal buzzard in WCNP (altho there are plenty around Darling! ), so hadn't thought of that .... :wall: And I know that the pix show very little, even to hazzard a guess!

A 'few' from southern KTP early March 12. At least I know the Martial Eagle which we saw a lot (incl Juveniles), but these brown ones

1) Guessing Juv. Goshawk. Was big-ish so if Goshawk I guess Southern Pale Chanting. Steppe Buzzard also crossed my mind. The only photo I took.
Image

2) (below-left) A somewhat smaller raptor. Thought maybe juv. Gabor Goshawk, but underside tail seem to be light brown and not barred :hmz:
3) (below-right) different bird seems like Tawny Eagle but happy to be corrected.
Image Image

4) This cute fluffy thing doesn't really match anything I can think of
Image

5) Wing-shape points me in the direction of a Kestrel, if so then Greater Kestrel seems to match colours an brown barred tail the best :?
Image Image

6) Another Tawny Eagle or is it  Was sitting on the grass next to the road near sunset together with the below.
Image Image

7) Lost again but as mentioned above together with #6

A lot I know but hope someone in the know has a bit of time on their hands. Many thanks for any help.

Michael

You are correct with the pale chanting goshawk and the tawny eagles.

The cute fluffy thing #4 is a greater kestral.

Its #2 that has me the most puzzled :hmz:
I need to think a bit more. It is definitely a juvenile of something. Do you have any other pictures of it?

Afraid not, only other pic I have is pretty much identical and quality-wise I doesn't really help to make it bigger.

Nice, agree the flying one #5 is that as well?

I'd say nr. 2 is a juvenile Steppe Buzzard.

Indeed #5 is also a greater kestrel - juvenile (dark eye), while the pale eye of #4 points to an adult greater kestrel.

Good Evening Great Dane.

Here's my 2 cents worth towards your Raptors:
1. Defiantly Juv SPCG. Light eye and the starting of the orange cere. Streaking on Chest and no feathers on Tarsi.
2. Juv Steppe Buzzard. Looks like it although the streaked chest is a first for me. The dull cere and featherless Leggings, combined with dark eye point to this.
3. Tawny Eagle. I think this is straight forward.
4. The cute fluffy thing is a Greater Kestrel. Streaking on head and yellow eye with general tawny appearance.
5. Hmmm Possibly Sub-Adult or Juv Greater Kestrel.
6. In the brown Eagle complex one can generally I.D the tawny's by a streaked neck, head and breast. I must say I've only seen this so pronounced once and that was the KNP. Nice one. The only difference to 7 is probably that 7 is a sub adult bird. I wanted to make it a Juv Verraux Eagle but that is dreaming a bit...... :wall:

Hope that helps somewhat....

I'll give you a hint; It's not an Osprey...

Haha thanks Deefstes.
