Are there any Wild Dogs at Addo?

Unread postby Kooning » Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:45 pm

I saw some references on other internet sites that there are Wild Dog in Addo... However I can't find any "official" confirmation about this.

I'm guessing that if there are any Wild Dog in the park that they must be in the northern sections and most definitely not in the main camp area. It might also be that some people confuse the Addo Elephant National Park with some neighboring private reserves?

In any case I was surprised to find very little reference to Wild Dogs in the entire Eastern Cape province. I would have thought that the habitat might suit them well and the province appears to have still some relatively large areas with little human activity...

I'm no expert, but I would think not, otherwise it would be on the park details.

They were introduced to the nearby Lalibela Private Reseve in 2006.............maybe that is where the confusion lies. :hmz:

I am not sure.... There are plans for cheetah and doggies to go to Addo, but I can't remember any article about them actually arriving. But that could be my age. ;)

No wild dogs on the mammal list.

We were there end June and on the animal list you got at the office were no Wild dogs.

Though Addo has expanded considerably I believe it is still too small and too fragmented to safely house a pack of wild dogs.

The dogs in Marakele had to be removed because they kept on escaping from the park and some got shot in the process.

I also believe that the Addo habitat is not ideal for wild dogs, especially the thick spek boom areas.

A year or two ago there were pictures/plans on the board at the Main Camp waterhole, promoting many facets of Addo. I am sure they had wild dog and cheetah for northern sections of Addo. Whether this was just wishful thinking or truth, I don't know. The cheetahs seem to have been released in one of those areas, but seldom hear about them...
