Just popping in here to see if anyone can help me with an ID for this little LBJ. Spotted this bird in Addo in March:

Have you considered the cisticolas, Bushbuddies? See if you can figure out which one of two probable species... It shouldn't be too difficult to identify which two I am referring to; the difficulty will be in making the correct ID once you have narrowed it down to those two.

(Tip: have a look at some discussions posted a little earlier in this thread...)

I thought it to be a "tinktinkie" (cisticola)... :hmz: What do you think about my guess that it is a Neddicky (Neddikkie)?

Another that I'm not sure about — actually two different birds. Both seen at MZNP in September 2011. Might they (both) be neddickies?

Thanks, pantera leo and Ladybirder! Neddicky has been my bogey bird for some years now, so I'm thrilled that I can finally tick it

Hey Rookie that's a tough selection to ID. Off the cuff.

#1 is from the cisticola family (note the rufus crown), probably Neddicky

Identification Help - LBJs

Unread postby Maurice » Mon Jun 04, 2012 1:56 pm

I still hope Faasie Peakock and Lizette are willing to give their opinion on the previous pipits, but in the mean time, I have some more LBJ's

Thank you for your help sorting these out!

I start with some Cisticola's, first 2 are seen at Kimberley area last month.

Bird 1 (my thought is wailing cisticola)

Bird 2 (real bad pictures, but my thought is Neddicky / Piping cisticola)

The next birds are taken in Hartswater area last month

Bird 3 (my thought is Neddicky / Piping cisticola again)

All of the Cisticolas are Neddicky unfortunately, Wailing has a much darker black mottled back.

Cheers

Slowly starting to index my bird sightings, unfortunately I am not yet mastering the art of identifying many of them with enough certainty to log them.

So here the first of a few seen this weekend in Marakele NP. With many of them I have a good idea what they might be bu looking fir confirmation. Others like the below I have no idea. Shape and size tells me Crombec of some sort, but doesn't fit any in my book very well. Also might be slightly larger than the 8-12cm mentioned in the book although not by much.

Here the we go, was must running around the campsite (at a distance) mid-day. Seemed very alert (looking around) was not picking the ground for food. the two pics are of the same bird in different posses.

Image Image

Later that day this one was sitting in the bush next to the tent before fleeing the paparazzi pointing the camera at it. Same as above? At least there are some similarities yet still looks different to me. Again Crombec comes into mind but still doesn't fit the illustrations in my book

Thanks in advance, Michael

Closest I can get to this one is Levaillant's cisticola. Mainly because I can't get it to look like anything else. Photo quality doesn't help. Was seen in a bush at campsite just around sunset.

Thanks in advance, Michael
