Olifants Lookout.

We once saw a huge male lion stalking a hippo that was walking along the river bank!!
Sadly that was before I joined the forums and took up photography.

They both just kept walking till they were out of sight.............not sure if the lion was actually intending to attack, or if they were just going the same way!!!

James of the Jungle the view from the N’wamanzi lookout is great and a very special place to us . It is almost as if there is an overwhelming positive presence or something good which is difficult to describe. We have seen elephants, hippo’s, Waterbuck, Impala and Primates over time from that lookout. Birdlife is also Nice photo Crested Val.

Oh yes, you hit the nail right on the head Crested Val Love it!

Sounds like a very optimistic lion, I wonder if he was successful? Brave boy!

We've been lucky enough to see both lion and leopard in the distance from the look out at Olifants, its such a great vantage point. You need a good pair of binocs though

I think my favorite part is being able to see so many different species at once. You observe them interacting and going about their business undisturbed from a distance. It really teaches you to adjust to natures time. What do you think?

You have to love the sunrise & sunsets too, unbelievably beautiful!

Have had some wonderful sightings from Olifants Camp as well, over the years, both from the viewing area, and one of the riverside units!!

.................and oh those sunrises and sunsets!!!

Now I have my camera, I will try to get some decent photos next visit.

Next time you go to Olifants don't go for the "best river view" bungalows. Have a look at the map. On the right bottom you'll see 107-111. They look towards Olifants Lookout, and in my mind they are the best bungalows. Quiet (away from reception and restaurant) with a stunning view.

Olifants Lookout itself has changed, it is not the 'big parkinglot' in front anymore. Still a Get out spot, but with bushes very close. So keep a weather eye out before you get out of the car.

Thanks for the tip DuQues. I've only stayed in bungalows 9-15 (somehwere there), amazing spot! Next time I'm at Olifants Ill take a walk to bungalows 107 - 111. They look very isolated in the corner, they must be very tough to book. How about the Nshawu guest house on the corner , that must be the ultimate.

I agree with Duques, we stayed in one of those units a few years back and it was great. At that time they were listed as perimeter units in Olifants.

@ Duques we are booked in unit 109 in July. I have never stayed this side of Olifants but since the kids are getting bigger we need the bigger unit (BD2V are just to small for 4 !) Is this a good unit that I have requested?

Oh to add we too love the look out. Last year we stopped there just before heading to camp and guess who came for a drink?



And then even if you don't see any animals the view will always bring you back!

As far as I could see without invading privacy that unit is the best of them.
So looking forward to your assessment of that unit!

Hi Everyone.

I am hoping that somebody can answer some questions I have:

My Father and I are going to be spending 4 nights in Olifants at the end of September. He first introduced me to KP 46 years ago when I was 2! he has been visiting the park for over 50 years and can you believe it we have never done a morning walk? Mainly I think because for many years we had my Mom with us and she was wheelchair bound and it wasn't possible for us to leave her. Anyway so I thought that in September it would be nice if I could take him on a morning walk, which I know he would thoroughly enjoy. My questions are;
- is there an age restriction and if so what is it?
- is the walk very strenuous, does one have to be super fit?
- should we book now or only when we get there?
- what should we take along with us (water, snacks etc)
- is there a question I haven't thought of/

Walks can cover 7 to 8 km over broken terrain that can be hilly.

I always take my own half litre of liquid, but there is a 'rest' time where the guide brings out a fruit juice and some very light snacks.

I think 65 is the number mentioned. If he can manage that and can prove it, at about 70, then I am sure it will be permitted, but check with the camp first.

Age is not the factor, for me, fitness levels are. Of course sturdy shoes are a must.

I have booked when I get inside the park.
