Pafuri picnic area was in the years 1939 to 1941 a tented camp and was demolished in 1948, and now is one of the favourite picnic spots in Kruger.

Cape Otter, I love going there myself.

Frank and his enthusiastic birding attracts many people.

This is a one day old Nyala born in the picnic site.

Harold Mockford lived in the Pafuri area from 1939 to 1985. It is said that he raised two Otters that lived on the property with him but they were unfortunately shot by the police when they took control of the border post. One of the predecessors of Frank was apparently a cheerful chap and he made good wood fires for Kruger travelers to prepare their breakfast over the glowing coals, usually consisting of extra fat plump sausages, eggs fried in lard in pans, bacon, juicy steaks and hot toast made from wholesome thick slices of white bread on which they thickly smeared creamy salty yellow butter. Apparently he was very happy to pour boiling hot water from his blackened kettles which he kept on the fire the entire day into the coffee mugs of the hungry picnic goers. Fortunately today we know better about good modern food and we still prepare breakfasts at Pafuri but it rather consist of grilled soya sausage, fat-free and egg-free eggs and a slice of wheat and GI free bread on which we smear a thin invisible layer of cholesterol-free vitamin enriched margarine.
