Thank you Ladybirder and Arks !

I think that these are some sort of female weaver, but I'm not certain which? I'm guessing southern masked weaver or village weaver — or even redhead weaver? Seen at Crooks Corner on 17 April 2012.





And I suppose that it's always possible that they are two different sorts? Or that they might even be nonbreeding males?

We have never been into identifying birds before on our trips to KNP but I think it's time we start. Can anybody help us with the identities of these?

Do you have a field guide? These are all birds that you should be easily able to ID for yourself — which is a BIG boost to your confidence — with a field guide. Very soon you'll be helping others with IDs here

Thank you very much Arks....Yes, when we return to KNP in November I'll definitely pick up a field guide....they aren't readily available here in Florida. We are looking forward to familiarizing ourselves with the birds of Africa. Going north this year (Punda Maria) which I understand is good birding.....Thanks again,...Ed

Whoops! Sorry, Ed, I hadn't noticed that you're based in Florida. But I'm glad you're planning on getting a field guide on your next visit. And meanwhile, DO please keep asking for help here, the birding fundis on this forum are a HUGE resource! I've learned SO much from them

That northernn sector of Kruger has some of the best birding in South Africa! And November is prime time!

Another one that's puzzling me I think it's a cisticola, possibily a lazy cisticola? Seen on the Mahonie loop on 18 April 2012.

I really have no clue what this little birdie might be — possibly a juvenile of some sort? Seen near Punda Maria on 20 April 2012.

I spotted this lark on Eleazer road near Potchefstroom on 9 August. Although I didn't manage a front picture, there was distinct streaking on the breast. I'm thinking its a Sabota lark, although I would have thought the white eyebrow would be a little more prominent?





Then I spotted this weird bird sitting prominently. It looked to be about the size of an ant-eating chat or a lark, so quite a heavy bird. The pics I managed were very difficult to get - I had to stand on the carstep hanging out in order to get the camera to focus even remotely on the bird and not the grasses in front. Even so, the results are not great.




I'm thinking it might be a Long-tailed widowbird. Am I even close?

Good evening

In late June this year I visited Secunda and photographed this lark like bird some distance away. I have been trying to ID it, and have finally decided on Flappet Lark given the white throat and rufous belly, but I have managed on many occasions to have decided on an ID only to have one of the experts point out a detail I have missed! I am always grateful for this as from every error I learn.

Is this a Fappet Lark?
