Tankwa - New camping

Unread postby mistral » Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:32 pm

I had heard that proper camping facilities were being built for the first time at Tankwa - they were due to be completed by the end of May??

Anyone know how far this project is - I don't see this featuring on the SANparks reservation system as yet.

Hi Mistral,

We are indeed in the process of constructing six campsites in the Perdekloof section of the park. Each stand will have its own ablution and kitchenette, side to side with a second stand's.

We unfortunately experience major hold-ups in receiving construction materials timeously - not uncommon in our remote setting... This in turn results into delays in the completion of the project. However, construction should be completed by December this year, at the latest.

An old building has also been renovated into two ablution/kitchenettes within the Langkloof. These are being completed as we speak.

We will keep the forum posted on the progress of the above projects. You are also welcome to contact our offices at 027 341 1927 for further information.

Thanks Letsie!

Don't we all know that building is never a simple project. :D

Will be visiting Tankwa from Friday.

We camped in Tankwa during the first week of October and we enjoyed the wild camping that it seems only Tankwa offers. I hope they will not replace the Steenkampshoek, Langkloof and the other wild camps with those "tame" campsites at Perdekloof.
What they can rather do, is to add some more such camps, allow only one party at a time and also add a place to shower and get water near or at the Reception, so that campers can replenish water and wash etc before moving on to the next wild camping spot.
I must also thank the staff at Tankwa for their friendly and helpful attitude. They made our stay there a highlight of our 30 day trip when we went to several National and Provincial Parks.

Camping in Tankwa

Unread postby linlan » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:52 pm

Hi there. New to this forum and have so enjoyed reading many posts and trip reports...thank you!
We are travelling from Cape Town to Botswana in August/September this year and are planning 3 nights camping in Tankwa on our return journey. We are 3 couples in 4X4 vehicles and completely self-sufficient in terms of water etc. None of us have visited Tankwa before so are excited about ending our 3 week holiday there!
I am thinking of booking at Pyper se Boom for the first night as it seems to be the closest to reception and we will probably arrive lateish.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the other 2 nights? We all have rooftop tents so will have to pack up daily and are therefore very open to a different site each night. We would like to experience as much of Tankwa as possible in terms of scenery and terrain and are, of course, hoping there are still flowers to be seen(first week in September). We would also prefer the less developed campsites.....enjoy the feeling of no neighbours.
Many thanks. Linda

Linda, Steenkampshoek to us was the best. We were there on 1 Oct 2011 and the flowers was absolutely wonderful. Someone told us that the flowers were even better in September, so maybe you will be lucky.
We also stayed at Schaapwagterspos, which has a large pepper tree for shade.

Enjoy
