Sad news about Gida-Gida aka Nwanedzi

Sanparks Big Tusker site wrote:
Sadly Gida Gida was lost on the 4th of July 2012 and investigation of the tusks and carcass confirmed that this was in fact the popular tusker from the Letaba area. Gida Gida had not yet reached his prime as a large tusker but was growing considerably and had the potential to be a prominent tusker of the area.

Very sad news to hear that NWANEDZI has died , his carcass was found near Letaba. He died around 4th of july.

Nwanedzi was a very promising tusker , expected to be a big one in near future. The cause of his dead is not known (yet).

I have seen him last year close to Letaba camp where he was posing very nicely at about 10 meters.

RIP

I'm so sorry to hear that. What a shame that no-one seems to have photographed him this year too. Is he the one (by a different name) that SANParks recently announced had died?

RIP Nwanedzi.

Salamanda,
Idd Sanparks named him Gida-Gida but he was at my site long before that so I kept the name Nwanedzi

Hi Tuskermites

Putting some things together over the last months:

Was able to update Duke and Mandleve's pages with new "old" pictures made in 1991. Very interesting to see younger Duke and Mandleve (carried heaviest tusks so far ever in Kruger). Both are history but great to have this pictures to make their pages even more interesting

Updates for the tuskers of today: Just updated Masasana (getting a better pciture of his ear marks now) and previous many other tuskers like Ngodzi, MaMerle (tusker cow) , Kaleka, Machachule , Mculu and others

Also updated STE (Save the Elephants org) tuskers MAC, Nkombo and Leopold

Nwanedzi died recently, carcass found july 4th.

Added two new ones named Shisha & Mashikiri

Moved Duke to the tuskers of Yesterday

Identified a lot of tuskers posted here or sent to me directly... some could not even say "thank you" , but majority did...

Some answers to questions I got:

No, I am not working for Sanparks but just like to do this.

Why I am doing this ?
I was touched by Tuskers since I met them , it was and is just a special feeling. I felt like doing something for them and set some goals like creating the best updated site about them with the help of all who are in africa and specially in Kruger NP to create a Tusker site maintained by me but "filled" by you to share our interest in these giants. Second but also very important for me is to spread the Tusker virus to activate as many people as possible to help each other to keep the site up to date.
With more then 100 different people today who sent pictures I am very very happy

I love to ID tuskers for you but know that I do this all in my own time next to a fulltime job so I always try to answer quickly but I can't promise I always can reply in one or a few days

So.... time to thank all for the entries and let's spread the Tusker virus around....

Thanks again for all the hard work Aat.

I don't know if any of the Addo elephants have been named but saw this one on the webcam in June. Love the curve of those tusks.

I have seen several questions about top 10 of tuskers in Kruger NP

I just added a Top 10 to my tusker site at the main page , you can't miss it.

Top 10 based on length and thickness of the tusks and my own "judgement".
The exact sequence can be different but overall I think they are the 10 Big Boys

Looking at this tusker I think it is Malopenyama (so far seen in Letaba area) but very well possible he covers a bigger area like many other tuskers. Going after the ladies can make them active for a nice "walk" ...

We know that some tuskers stay at "home" forever and others like to travel.... almost like us humans...
Condsider Mac as big traveller... walking from Timbavati area up to Shingwedzi , down to Letaba etcetera...
Just received tracking report from STE ans Mac is at the "border" between timbavati area and kruger np , proably moving to mopani / shingwedzi again...

Hi Aat,

I thought these two were reasonable tuskers. Are they familiar?

Saw this one just south of Shimuwini. He has a distinct "floppy" right ear.

And this one we saw on the Tropic of Capricorn.
