.. BTW, how far are we from the goal of 10% of the land being set aside for conservation?

From "Biodiversity, Science and SANParks" a recent SANParks publication:

"The SA national parks system covers over 4 million hectares"
I think this represents about 6% of SA's surface area.

"By 2020, 12% of SA's land surface and 20% of its marine environment must be conserved. This is the target of the country's National Protected Areas Expansion Strategy"

"Since 1998 SANPARKS has added a total of 6160 sq kms to protected areas in South Africa"

With a land surface area of 1 200 000 sq km, my calculator shows this to be a further .5% added since 1998, and not .05% as another member posted. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

0.5% sounds like a small amount but it is still significant. Whilst we may all wish for conservation progress to be bigger, faster, better, we must recognise each important incremental step. If a country like South Africa can increase its' protected wild places under the economic and social constraints it has then it is a fine example for other countries including my own. :)

But SANParks is just one of the country's conservation bodies. Is the 2020 target of 12% just for SANParks or does it include Cape Nature, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the other provincial Parks Boards. Not to mention all the private reserves?

Yes, Saraf, my understanding is that the 12% is the target for the total of all SA's formal protected areas. This at present I understand is about 6%, of which SANParks has approx 40 000 sq kms, which is roughly 3.3% of SA's land surface, This is just over half of the total area under formal protection.

If we take SANPark's statement that since 1998 they have increased thier holding by 6160sq km, then the 40000 sq km held in 2010 represents a 17.5% increase in their share since 1998. (0.5% increase in their share of the whole country.)

Still quite a way to go, but the figures I've used are based on a 2010 publication, so perhaps there are more recent gains to be taken into account.

Do you think SANParks gets a fair price for the land it buys? For instance does a SANPark enquiry suddenly shoot the price up?

Taken from "Biodiversity, Science and SANParks - Conservaton in times of change":

'The expansion of these protected areas has come about in a variety of ways, with 54% of the land acquired by the state and SANparks, 19% purchased by donors, 11% added through contractual inclusions, and 15% via the transfer of government land'

Saraf, I would imagine that SANParks would be very concious of the need to assess the financial implications of any acquisitions very carefully.
