Note that if you shop at Makro you must get a customer card first. This means going to the reception/customer service desk where they will give you a card straight away.

Hi Dabchick
If you don't want to stop at roadside stalls, you will be passing Spar (on the right) just before the Phalaborwa Gate.
It is an excellent Spar with fresh veg and fruit..........all good quality. Very friendly staff.

The "Total" garage just before it is also very safe with friendly staff....they more or less clean your whole car for the same tip as you would give for the windscreen!! Cant help with one nearer Polokwane sorry!!

Hope you have a wonderful time.

Hi Dabchick  Just to add what has already been said we have found there are many excellent interesting places in the Haenetsburg/Magoebaskloof area that sells a variety of good quality farm produce and home made stuff including cheese and confectionery. We have found it well worth lingering around a bit in that area (foodstuff wise). I am sure you will find some fresh fruit there as well that are grown in that valley and the Lowveld :D .

What is the best route from the International Airport to Malelane Gate. Is there a toll road - what does that involve? Can one shop at Malelene for food for Kruger? Are the shops on the road to Kruger?

You turn left out of the airport road and then continue to the N4, turn left again and head for Malelane.
After passing through the Crocodile river gorge you will meet the toll gate (currently R48/car I think) and then a short while after that Malelane where you will find 2 good supermarkets - Pick & Pay on the right at the first traffic lights and to the left at the same lights and a short distance down the road a Spar supermarket.
Another 10km past that is the turning to the KNP park.

If you want a pillow etc, then go to the Spar complex as you will find other shops there too where you can get a pillow. Spar usually has camping chairs, but not always. Midas, next to Pick and Pay, or even the hardware store just below it (cannot remember the new name) would also have some camping stuff.

Spar sells biltong - good choice. PandP also sells it.

Also, does anyone know the weight allowance on SAA from Jo'burg to MQP and how many pieces of baggage you're allowed?

The weight limit for domestic is 20Kg per person, but if you exceed the limit they normally charge you extra. :hmz:

The SPAR in Malelane is one of the best. Great selection and excellent meat counter. Also, as a forumite said, you can anyhting there. They also have a liquor store - TOPS in the orner of the centre.

We lived in Mozambique for 8 years and I did most of my grocery shopping there.

Also buy bottled water if you don't want to drink tap water in KNP. The water in the Parks' Shops are very expensive.

Thanks for that information re Spar. We don't use bottled water, just drink the tap water which we have always found OK. I didn't think that one could buy liquor outside the park and take it in. We buy it in the camps and have had to show evidence of our accommodation. Not that we drink much but the SA wines are very good.

Wildebeeste, you are allowed to bring your own alcohol in if you are sleeping overnight.

Jay, I am pretty sure the Pick & Pay in White River will be open till 18.00 and it has most that you will need, easy to get to from the airport and also close to Numbi Gate.
