I said on a previous thread, 'if I could catch some right place at the right time and bottle it and sell it I could be very wealthy'.

But until then I will have to work.

Tough KG :wall: Maybe next time.

Morning All,

We have all heard the expression "At the right place at the right time"...now where is the right place and what is the right time?

Yesterday morning we did a walk in the samevloeiing area, where we park our vehicle (it can be seen from samevloeiing by the guests). Just after we started our walk and was heading towards the calcrete ridge to catch the early morning sun (as it was very cold), there were guests at samevloeiing watching us through their binoculars.

While watching us the suddenly saw a cloud of dust appearing from behind us in the riverbed, unfortunately for us we didn’t hear a thing, never the less after the dust cloud settled a leopard with its kill appeared and dragged the kill into a tree about 150 meters behind our vehicle.....

With all this action going on behind us and we were to far away to hear anything we missed it......

The guest’s couldn’t understand why we walked in the wrong direction when everything happens behind us. So how close to having this action on a walk could you get to?

Maybe next time

And those guests were us   All we saw were some pawprints in the road on top of our tracks going into the park....

And boy was it cold!!!!

Hi to all!
I had a meeting with some friends yesterday. They are planning to visit the park in August, long before my planned 13th visit in December.

But its a long time since my last visit, and I wonder how sightings have changed!

My experience is as follows: In the period between 1994 and 2005, lion sightings in the Auob riverbed was down, largely due to the ?15 lions that were shot on the Namibian side in the late 90's.

The park also had a huge veld fire north of the 2nd dune road, that had many antelopes moving over to the Botswana side for grazing.

But it seems from recent trip reports that there is a lot of lion activity in the Auob riverbed, and even down to Gemsbokplein, which used to be a "dead" area for me on my visits.

What is the current size of herds like? And specifically the counts during December / January?

In the Auob as well as Nossob riverbeds?

Regards

Hi there ctv4

KG is away at the moment so you might need to wait a week or so before he can get back to you with specifics but here's my thoughts - we were there 3 weeks ago and there was great lion activity all the way along the Auob river all the way up to Mata Mata - I have been 6 times over the past 18 months - once Oct/Nov, twice in April, once June, once Jan and once Nov/Dec and our best lion sightings were between Houmoed and Auchterlonie and between Twee Rivieren and Rooiputs every time, except for our first trip in Oct 2010 when we had awesome lions at Maries ( but never again !!) ... As for herd sizes, Dec and Jan saw HUGE herds of springbok ( well over 200 in some herds) all along the Auob and 3 weeks ago I have never seen such big herds of Gemsbok - up to 50 - also around TR and up to about Kamqua ...

Don't know if that helps at all ...

Thx Scouter!

Seems things have changed a bit, wonder if I must book a extra evening at Mata Mata! Am currently booked for 8 nights at Nossob, 1 at Gharagab, and only 3 at Mata Mata!

If I do decide to stay another night, it will mean I need to travel from Mata Mata directly to Pretoria and that is a long long drive!

Pleasure  Sure Jannie will give you some more feedback when he returns too... Nossob is always stunning though isnt it and the sightings have been great there too so its a really hard one .... at least at Nossob you can go either N or S whereas at MM you only really have the one option  - and it IS a long way home from MM though - it took us 5 hours to get from TR to MM the last time - spent an hour at Houmoed with 4 cheetah, then a pride of sleeping lions near Gemsbokplein and finally a leopard on the far side of the river near Montrose - magical day ! But they were all gone on the return journey, all except the lions who had moved all of about 5 metres :D

Whatever you decide, I know it will be amazing

Hi Scouter,

I will be in the park in less than a month and will stay for 3 nights in the Mata-Mata area and then Nossob ect. It seems that there is not much happening between Mata-Mata and Urikaruus?
thx

Hi AntonA
We were in the park at Urikaruus between 15 and 21 May and saw loads in the area. Cheetah, more cheetah, lions, loads of Hyeana and a leopard at Urikaruus. The old saying of being at the right place at the right time always applies

Hi AntonA

As Gavin says, the area around Mata Mata is usually great - its just that we stayed at TR and only did a day trip up to MM this time .... but last Dec we were at MM for 2 nights and during that time had 7 seperate cheetah sightings - 3 of them on kills - so it was awesome... The night before we arrived our friends had lion at the camp's waterhole and theres usually spotties around too .... so yes, it really is right place right time but I'm sure you'll love it anyway....

I know this thread has been a bit sparse lately but only because KG has been hectically busy for the past few weeks and is away at the moment but keep your eye on it and have a chat to him when you are there for some current sightings.

Have a wonderful trip - we will be there for a week from the 16th of June but I think we might just miss you ???

Thanks Anton  - you enjoy your trip too and holding thumbs for many fantastic sightings for you !

(I see you are from my old stomping ground - grew up in SWest, went to school there ( when Hotties was the only high school - does that show my age  ), worked at the library and spent many many happy years there - its changed a bit I know but still love it :D)

Last week we saw eland between Kij Kij and Melkvlei, on the dunes in the SA part , but when they saw our vehicle they moved away over the dunes out of sight, We never seen eland this low before.
