Pretty much everyone knows who the "Big Five" are. Some bush lovers will also be familiar with the "Big 6 birds", the "Little five" and the "Rare five".

Well here is another one for you. Who would you put in your "Unfortunate looking five"?

I was going to go with the "Ugly Five" but I figured that was a bit harsh. All of these creatures are beautiful in their own way...

Here are my five:

1. Blue Wilderbeest
2. Marabou Stalk
3. Warthog
4. Chacma Baboon
5. Brown Hyena

Hi James of the Jungle Welcome to the forum. I get what you mean. Mine, because they are all so long and kinda slender, just one is a bit more chubby looking - number 4, with small but scary looking kind of eyes, are:

1) Black Mamba
2) Mozambican Spitting Cobra
3) Rinkhals (Ring-necked Spitting Cobra)
4) Puff Adder
5) Boomslang

But I agree with you on what you have said:

I agree with 1-4 JotJ, but number 5 should be Bennievis...

Sometimes its a compliment not to be voted Number 1

I think another candidate should be the aardvark. It looks like it's been assembled from all the unwanted spare parts!
The porcupine is also another weird creature. . Spines for hair and the teets of the female is situated on her flanks. Could get a bit sticky if the young wants to suckle and the teets are situated in the normal (belly) area.

Aardvark, without a doubt. It looks a bit like Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.

Marabou Stork, a most unfortunate looking bird with rather unfortunate habits as well. Anything that spends the day defecating on its legs is rather suspect.

The elephant shrew is another strange critter. Possibly hyperactive and bad tempered.

Most moles have rather unattractive orthodontic arrangements.

then for Joburgers, I will include the Parktown Prawn.

I have to agree with my friend MM. the piglet (aardvark), and the ugly bird (Maribou Stork) would be at the top of my list.
Some say the Wildebeest is, but I find them so homely that they are cute! The Tsessebe on the other hand is not cute!
The SO and I both lover Hyena and Warthogs, so don't find them ugly at all.
The Pink blimp of the water, the Hippo is an ugly beast in my book! talk about defacating, they are like a salad shooter, spraying it all over the place!

Absolutely! The porcupine, how could I forget? The aardvark is another strong candidate. Perhaps those 2 should take the number 4 and 5 slots. Good call guys

I must admit I also have a soft spot for Warthog and Hyena. Id be happy to bump them off the list.

I'm glad we all still agree on the Maribou stork for the number 1 slot... Now that's a face for radio!

What about the crested barbet. Love these birds but, as my dad always said, they do look like they were designed by a committee!!!!

Yellow card - Piglet is a star. Kind, cheerful, helpful and most of all PINK!

How about the lappet faced vulture? It has to be one of the meanest looking creatures out there, particularly when they muscle their way in at old kills and chase off other vultures.

That pink flapping skin on its head and neck must surely put it close to the top 5???

Saw a tshirt up north in Punda or one of the other camps on recent trip with the ugly five on them. Pretty much the list that you have here.

Said i would grab one later, but never saw the tshirt again.

I agree JoJ. The lappet faced vulture is a candidate for sure.
Another one that can look quite dodgy is the water mongoose. Especially when wet!
