The total length of KNP roads??

Unread postby o-dog » Fri Dec 11, 2009 12:37 pm

Maybe a bit of a random question but I was wondering if anyone new the combined length of dust roads in the KNP as well as that for the tarred roads - this is obviously referring to those roads accesible to tourists??
I heard in the region of 3000km for all but not sure!

BB I am doing the same...
I covered many new ones in the last week I was there. I have about 4 or 5 roads still that I dont remember seeing/doing. Basically just a couple around the bush/private camp south of Mopani, then the old main road north of Mopani and then one or two others in the South. Even if you dont see many animals on some roads I still enjoy the scenery!

Same here. I always have that urge to explore further and further and check out new roads even if it is rated by some forumites as a "dead" road, like the S50 past Kanniedood dam.

I think the only roads open to the public I have not driven are some of those short link roads west of Phalaborwa and parts of Shongololo loop and S143 Tropic of Capricorn and the S144 Old Main Road nearby .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

You can only see 20% of the park from the roads

Unread postby yumna » Fri May 25, 2012 10:03 pm

A Game Ranger once told me that if you drove every road in the park and looked as far as the eye can see in every direction you have only seen 20% of the park

That is amazing , so anything you see is a great sighting

The kruger holds many secrets and mysteries

Actually it is even less I think... Imagine what there is in the other parts!

But walks, trails and the 4x4 trails will up the percentage.

Not the amount the roads take, but what you can see from them. 20% would mean that you can see about 400.000 hectares....

If 400,000 hectares makes us feel like the way it does just imagine if we could see the whole of the Kruger, pure, pure heaven I am sure

Assuming a 3,000 km road network (right off the top of my head, I am too lazy to look it up) and assuming visibility is on average 100 m on either side, you can see an area of 60,000 hectares if you drive all the roads.

This is of course a ballpark figure, as visibility varies from a few meters to several kílometers. However, even in areas where you can see certain larger objects in the far distance, a lot of what lies in between will be obscured by vegetation.
