I have been to Kruger a number of times and have experienced many unique, fantastic moments in nature.....3 male lions killing a buffalo, a mother leopard with her 8 week old cub, a pride of lions on a giraffe kill, just to name a few. However despite its reputation I am yet to see a cat on the S100 and that is not due to a lack of trying. I have travelled that road more times than I have fingers and toes. Do they exist on that road? Or is this my "bad luck" road?

We are ever hopeful, but each time we are disappointed!

We have seen leopard and lions on several occasions. Cheetah right at the junction at the start and an AWC about half a k in on the S100. All these sightings have been either early early or late late. When we've driven it during the dy it's always been quiet in the cat front.

Riaan, I too have not had much luck on the S100, I think out of the BIG 5, I have only seen elephants on that road. Though I must say, I have had some good bird sightings.

We stood on the s100 for almost and hour and half looking at a male lion during our recent trip. Open view at a distance. Cars stopped, looked and left again. Almost of they didnt see it.
We also spent 2hours in the morning with 4 lions and the same group on same spot the afternoon for another 2 hours. Cars didnt even spend 10mins and left again. During the afternoon one stood upband walked towards the edge of the road.

I have seen many lions and leopard on the S100. Perhaps I have been lucky but I think you need to go slow and look many people dont see them

Hi there! I actually wanna say yes...don't drive the S100, so it's quiet when I'm there! Hehehe
but in all honesty, I have been going to the Kruger for over 20 years since a kid, and STILL this road
is my FAV of any road in Kruger.
I have seen Predators on this road sooo many times, I drive this road AT least once a day when at Satara,
and it almost never disappoints! For me to drive this road without seeing a Cat,is a bad day...honestly!

I once drove it midday in the summer, and saw 13 lions, alone! They walked to the road, and I followed them for about 500metres down the road without any other car! They then lay next to the road in the shade,so I left,telling my Girl whe will come back. About 5km's further we saw 7 Lions again,and sat there about an hour till they walked over the road yet again!
I almost know where every Leopard lives,there's about 4 -5 resident Leopards on this road, and I've seen them so many times,also with kills in the trees.
Cheetahs only about 3 times. My parents saw Wild dogs last year as well.
This road will 4ver be in my heart. Another road that was famous in the late 80's and 90's is the Sweni road to the south, it used to be exactly like the S100,and also just as famous! Still drive it a lot as well,with luck every now and again. The thing is...it's all about luck in the end,knowing which roads to drive when. You see, in Satara area there is NO such thing as a bad/quiet road...all are excellent!
What I usually (honestly) do...I drive the roads which other people that day don't drive,especially when I look at the Sightings Board, then I go and drive the roads where nothing was seen, hehehe! usually works 4 me. But hey... that's only my lookout.

I used to see lions and cheetah on this road, but in recent years I think that some of the ugly forumites who ride it regularly have chased them away.

OMG, that is so funny, my wife and I refer to the S100 as "old faithful" if we want to see cats we say lets go to old faithful and are very rarely disappointed.

Wowee by the sounds of some of your viewings, it does seem to be my bad luck road. I will keep trying (next visit is in 4 months and can hardly wait) in hope that I get see some of what you have seen.
If anyone has photos of cats on the S100 please post, would love to see them.

Cats on the S100??

Well if you ask the Ratpack team( any forumites remember us??? ) they will tell you in no unclear terms that there is no cats on that road unless you can count our teddybear lion(cant remember our special guests name)!

But if you ask me in my capacity I will tell you what ive seen there in the last 3 years that ive been keeping record of my trip to the so called best road in KNP..

1xcaracal
plenty of lion sightings
plenty of cheetah sightings including kills made
5x leopard sightings
AWC sightings

so yes I do think there is a little bit of cats there...

It all boils down to the "right time, right place" saying! My SIL, who now lives in Australia, used to rave about the S100 and she still spends time at Satara on her sadly infrequent visits.

My husband and I have had many drives on that road with almost nothing to see (even general game) but we have also, over the years, had some good cats. A few years ago there was a lion kill in a donga almost on the road.

This last March I saw lions twice and a brief cheetah sighting on the S100.

The adjacent roads have often produced good sightings, e.g. lions mating, lion kills etc., so it is worth driving the S100, even if only to get to the other roads!
