Thanks, RJ.. Much appreciated. Southern Boubou was one of my possibilities that I came up with.
It takes one tree to make 10,000 matches, but one match to burn 10,000 trees.

It looks more like a Black-backed Puffback to me - it even puffs its back a bit!

The bill looks slender enough to be Puffbacks, but there is not white edges to the wing feathers and the eyes should be red. The rufous lower belly is also wrong for Puffback.

I would say Southern Boubou...

I'll also go with Southern Boubou, the Puffback has a red eye which I can't see!

You are all right off course. I should either refrain from IDing from photos, as it is a bit harder then in real life, or look at the photos for longer than 2 seconds before posting. Southern Boubou!

Hi everyone,

Seasons greetings! :)

I saw this bird at The Cavern, northern Drakensberg, 2 weeks ago. Any ideas what it is?

Very cute bird Flutterby!

I can't wait to see what experts say. I've been through all my books (i'm still a new birder) and i'm leaning towards a few possibilities. Your bird definitely looks like its undergoing some sort of plumage transition.

Is this a Juv Greater Honeyguide? They have a yellow 'wash' and the bill looks right.

The other things I was considering were a Boubou, or even a crimson breasted shrike (the yellow kind), but those seem slightly crazy.

Hi Flutterby, I would say that this is an immature Southern Boubou.

Cheers

Niall.

Hi Niall & Moose,

The Southern Boubou is a regular visitor in our garden as well. Just saw him again on Sunday while we were having a braai.

Yesterday I was helped to load photos. Today I'll be grateful for confirmation of names, for years I've called one of the mousebirds rosey faced- I now know its called redfaced. So I'm asking for help with these before I get into bad habits and learn the wrong name.
