Does anyone have a copy of "The Safari Companion " by Richard Estes ? It is a great book to have in the bush as it gives descriptions of various types of animal behavior and what to look out for in many scenarios. It deals with each animal as to breeding, aggression, submission, sociable behavior, courtship, play, etc. I have a copy and it always follows me to the bush. Speaking of which my trip to KNP is getting closer -- booked in from 10 May at 3 camps for 11 nights. Cant wait !! Look out for the yellow ribbons !!

Thanks Moose 1!

I found a copy of "The Safari Companion" here in our Unisa-library and it looks like a great book to have in the bush. This "Revised and Expanded" edition I found however only has black-and-white drawings of the animals. I will thus use it in companion :D :D with a book with photos  such as "Field guide to the Mammals of the Kruger National Park" by Heike Schütze when we visit Kruger 7 -11 May 2012.

Thats great ! I also take the Field Guide and also Signs of the Wild which has pics of droppings, spoor etc and it has helped me track animals on the sand roads. Sometimes going down a road I see spoor going the other way and so turn around and start tracking from the car and ---- yes --- often have found them !
Dont forget the various books on Trees, and Flowers and Grasses etc. It can be a lovely working holiday !! I dont go there just to see the Big 5 !! Its good to know where the "sweet grazing " areas are as the antelope will be there and, of course, the predators who follow them.
Go well.

Lovely to see another Moose on the forum. 8) A warm welcome, Moose1 and I will keep a look out for the book you recommended.
