Does the bright blue feathers of some kingfisher species contain any colour pigment?

No, the colour is derived from the structure of the feather and the way it reflects light, rather than from some colour pigment.

Yes Imberbe you are IT.

The bright blue of the feathers is a result of tyndal scattering. This is where layers of structural keratin that make up the feathers are interspersed with air spaces that reflect particular wavelengths of light to give the blue appearance.

Imberbe, you have waited too long to post another question so I am going to take over here :D

Besides the fact that Pel's Fishing-Owl eats fish, how do they differ from other Owl species?

Not even one guess :!: The answer is firstly, there is a clear absence of a facial 'disk' because this owl species does not rely on its hearing to detect prey. Secondly, its flight is not silent, because the fish cannot hear it coming.

What is the largest prey item a pearl spotted owl has been documented to take?
